Enemy Kept Alive

Throughout my game I was whiping the floor clean with my enemy, I even managed to get him to give me planets when he asked for a peace treaty, but I kept going, I wanted to see exactly how the amount of time played would effect my score...

Anyhoos, throughout his ships adjusted to meet the adjustments I made to mine, i.e when I saw he started with Missiles, I set myself up with Point Def and got some guns, he saw I got guns, got some armor and moved onto guns himself. So I went onto amor... etc... etc... until we had a variety of ships each that were only any good against certain other ships, which was fine, I simply kitted a few out on each planet and had no probs.

However... then he managed to make uber ships, all defenses and all attacks higher then myself, I couldn't even match that military might anymore, he had no techs I didn't have and only Micro Repair Bots as a trade good....

He had only one Military Resource Starbase that I saw... but you can't get that much of one of those... can you? I never managed quite so much, I'm sure.

How the hell did he get so powerful so quickly? Do computer opponents get tougher if the game lasts too long or something? It'd be useful to know so that I know whether to kill early or attempt to drag a game on aslong as possible. I want a 100 year game.... but not if I won't survive past 50, lol.

Thanks for any info.

If he's evil he might be using some of the special evil weapons. The military resource starbase can boost your attack and defence values by up to 15% I believe, so that could make quite a difference as well.

Actually it can increase the attack and defense power by around 70% if it is fully outfitted.

It is my experience with AI that if you don't take advantage of your human edge the computer will getcha in the long haul.

AI= easy to beat if you can stay ahead but if you let them stay on par, you will need great tactics to win the end game.

I think they can boost by 59% (or something like that, at least in 1.0X).

Either that or did he get some lucky event with a bunch of precursor ships?

You know with precursor ships, and by end game they're rubbish. ooh look, a bunch of 2 attack ships, they would be gone from ONE of my cruisers by the time I'd got anywhere. The Rangers only last so long as well, they haven't got much state of the art stuff.

That might not be that bad of an idea. After so many turns, dependant on map size, the AI starts getting advantages until it gets the full 200% bonuses. That would stop folks from dragging out games just for score.

That wouldn't be such a good idea. You'd punish people going for a research or influence victory, esp. on harder diffculties. They're fixing up the scoring now, so its not an issue anymore.

I was also playing that game as evil, so it wouldn't of been his evil weapons as I had those too

Heh, if it was the military mining base, you wanna know the ironic thing? Just me and him left, I had more influence and, in the UP I voted no limit on modules, he voted 4. If I'd voted 4 too, he wouldn't of got it so high, lol.

The only thing that bothers me is that, if games aren't to go on for too long... does it mean I'm only gonna get 10 - 20 year games that I can finish in 1-3 hours?

The easiest victory? Military victory via Influence Starbases... but its not that fun, so I won't be doing it again. I want a biiig looong game, not only for my metaverse score, but so I can complete every aspect of that game, get culture high enough, ally everyone and go for the tech tree. (have those victories turned off of course) Then go in for the kill
