GNN & Situational Awareness

Should GNN be used to keep player informed of events outside his empire?

This post was inspired by one I read concerning "Why don't I get a messge when someone declares war?"

I suggest the role of GNN be expanded to improve the player's situational awareness. Every military watchcenter I've ever been in has CNN going 24x7. GNN could do the same for us.

GNN could report: Declarations of war, Alliances, Invasions, Colonization, Outcome of large battles, Changes in govt type. More??

In addition to providing good game intel, I think it would also add to game atmosphere.

It would be cool to have an option for the GNN news be running all the time in a ribbon at the bottom of the screen...maybe most of the time it would be garbage ...but you would get News Flashes when important things happened...for the less paranoid who don't mind the game connecting to the net every hour or so for updates it could even be set up to pull stuff from the forums like the latest post topics, or pull from a site where users make up headlines for it to use so it never gets old....

I like it, I like it. Here's your bump and a vote I like especially the idea of the scrolling news bar somewhere on screen.

My onliy worry is that by mid-game, it gets slow. I would not vote for this if it significantly impacts game performance.

I would like to get reports like

"The Humans and Yor war continues to drag on entering its X month with out either side gaining the upper hand."

"The Yor have driven deep into Torian Territory with their latests offensive capturing multiple worlds"

ect

flavor

Very nice idea, but make it an option in prefs just in case people don't want it.

That, sounds like a kick ass idea. BUT WAIT:

After Action Report news. So those people who want more interactivity between players are satisfied a bit. Kind of like football results

So you could see news of the latest journal entries, newsflashes, and reports of empire score lists on the metaverse, and some game highlights.

"And In other news, the Federation of Hitchhikers, under the leader of the benevolent Ford Prefect, cam close to galactic domination today, but were stopped at the last moment by the Drengin, who had used tech's supplied to them by the Terrans to halt this vast army"

... crap, it almost worked in my head. Written down it sounds awful.
I'll leave it there, in case anyone can improve me in a way, because if done properly could be a really cool feature for 1.2

It worked pretty well in SimCity 3000. (Ok so it is another genre, forgive me.) All the important stuff was in green or red. Everything else was yellow. And pretty funny as I recall.

I believe you were supposed to receive all war declarations (with sufficient espionage spending), but for some buggy reason this doesn't happen.

why would it require espianoge to c war declarations? i mean when ships begin to blow eachother up then u know who is at war with who plus since u can always just go to the relations screen to c who is at war with who why do u have to spend money to have a popup tell u whos at war when u can just check the diplomacy screen every turn? (granted it would be annoying checking every turn) definenlty think we need some sort of scrolling new ribbon specially with the galciv2 developement teams humor it would just be so much more better than sim city 3000's news banner

Hehe, speaking of humor, I have to admit, there were a few times while I was reading the game manual. (Yes, some people actually read the manual BTW) I almost died laughing. Ya got me pretty good!

Great idea! I hope it'll be added. At least we should be told who decleared/signed peace with who, it's a pain in the behind to check traties every couple of turns.

Fantastic ideas. Nothing more needs to be said. Scrolling newsbar would add tremdous flavor.

I agree that something like this is a great idea.

To add to the discussion, I would also like to see the GNN report organized better. Right now, the list is unorganized when lots of events happen in one turn. One solution might be to set up tabs in the report. The tabs would be for events like:

* "Military conflicts" (battle results)
* "Industrial News" (build queue updates)
* "Fleet Inaugurations" (new ship builds)
* "Foreign Relations" or "Intergalactic News" (treaties, foreign war updates, and the like).

If the scroll bar is used, these categories (or similar ones) could be used to break up the news into discrete and sensible segments.

Glavius has demanded money from "Urusiol" rumors say they have refused.

How about just having the option for the small line of scrolling text on the main bar, having it contain relevant information as well as randomly generated comedic stories when nothing interesting is happening. Something like.. "Chairman of Mitrosoft seen playing catch with Torian teenager - Drengin Warlord threaten to kick him in the shins if he doesn't cut it out."

You could even interact with it, maybe - a small icon in front of each relevant news story to give you the option of reading the full thing, or going to where the ship was built, or whatnot - as well as perhaps allowing the players to scroll the news stories with the mouse like they scroll on the map.

I'm not sure whether we really need everything that has been suggested here , but some enhancements to the GNN to make it more informative and diversified would be a good idea.
