They should tell us

when a war start

Hi all,
The is something that we should be anounced in the game : the start of a war. This information should be announced to all civilization that know them.

We know when peace is signed, we know when somebody pay tribute to prevent a war, we should know when a war is started. It's possible to go to the treaties screen to look a the state of the galaxie but I think it would be nice for our operative to give me this kind of information.

My 2 cents

I agree that it should be known (at least when you have decent espionage on them - just like peace treaties).

yes, it would be especially good to know if one would like to take advantage of the situation, and attack one (or both) of the two sides in the war!

i wonder why the messages don't come?

Agree, but only if you spy on the participants.
I mean we get "made piece" messages but why not about starting a war ?

I mean it could be even better, if your spy level with this civ is low , just give "started war with someone" message, if high then tell with who.
Also with very high spy level it could be nice to know who started the war.

Well, if it was just a 'war started with someone' then you could just go and look at the treaties in the diplomatic screen to find out who

Heck, I never see any message to indicate when someone declares war on *me*...why is that? It would be nice to see a decleration.

I'd settle for an option to declare war without first blowing something up. Oh, and to go onto the trade screen and use the treat of war as a bargaining chip. That'd be nice.

"I'll trade your Hyper Laser IV technology for my Not Blowing Up Your Homeworld".

I've noticed that I only see the peace messages when I reload a game, sometimes 2-3 of them, and I known I didn't see them the first time I played that turn

In addition, they should have their standard response "Tap tap tap, is this Universal Translator working? I think I missed the punch line. Why would we ever agree to this"

And you should be able to say "No, really."

I sometimes get notices when the race really hates me and they want me to know about it. The leader of that race will pop up, call me ugly names, and delcare war. The other times though I will just be going along, smelling the flowers and then BOOM! a frieghter goes up in a cloud of vapor and I'm like.... 'Well crap!" and I start gearing up, by which point the enemy is already bearing down on my planets.

I think a notice would be nice but only if you have your espionage up like Lord KiRan said. That way the AI has a chance to do these surprise attack strategies.

If you ask for sometihng from someone that you have poor relations with, this will often be veiwed as a threat. If you have good relations with them, they treat it as though you are asking them to give you a gift.

Actually no we don't always know when they declare peace, even if it involves us. Its often been the case that someone will declare war on me and i'll go out all in military production only to find out 10 turns later that for somereason I'm no longer at war with them but at 'cool'. I just declare war again immediately but it can be weird.

I would also like to declare war without first attacking. And it would be really nice if all that espionage paid off and you got a one turn early warning on the impending attack, or may just a 'so and so is rally piss off and we better watch our backs!'

It is always fun to show up and say 'give me x or your toast' when you are so much more powerful and they are being irritating.

Um that would have to be a bug if that is actually happening for you. It takes both parties to declare peace so the AI should not be able to just end the war with you. I have never seen this happen though.. maybe you are just forgetting that you agreed to peace?

Double post, these forums really need some help. If I try to do anything besides view it, it messes up.

But... that's MY toast! I toasted it, I buttered it, it's MINE! You can't have it!

(Sorry, I couldn't resist... of course you meant "give me x or you're toast," but the image you wrought of demanding {something} or the toast of the Drengin Empire (or whoever), was too good to pass up )

Maybe some ally demanded that they made peace with you?

Fine... but lousy ally that is not telling me he forced peace for me...

I honestly think this area needs some serious work:

1. All wars should be announced.
2. All alliances should be announced.
3. All peace should be announced.
4. Allies should inform you when they take actions to force peace etc.
5. All status changes towards you should be announced.

Other intell can come through spying etc but it's just silly that you can view the relations but dont get the notifications when statusses change.

I agree with DrAtomic1 - since this information is effectively available anyway (if you check the treaty screen every turn) it shouldn't require espionage. Announcement of significant changes in relations between main races (declaration of war/ peace treaty / formation of alliance) ought imo to appear as popups. Since the information is available anyway it wouldn't change the game at all but would simply make sure you're up to speed with what's going on in the galaxy, without having to check your treaties screen all the time.

The trade system should have some sort of "or" and "what" function like : give me Hyperdrive plus OR we declare war; what would you give me for this?.

Also it definitly should be known when 2 civilizations go to war. I mean, TODAY war is a big deal. Imagine a war between planets and solar systems; how could the GOVERNMENT of your civ NOT know about it, how could the ruler of a civ NOT be told about this. I also believe that It would be good to know who started the war if you have Advanced spying and maybe taking out the Civ that started war would change your reputation? Maybe simply destroying a bad civ would make you more Evil if you lean toward Evil or make you more Good if you lean toward Good? That's just an idea.

This is somewhat of a sidebar issue relating to this AI alliance, war subject. It seems to me that allies are far too eager to make peace with your common enemy leaving you holding the bag. Is there a setting in the XML that can increase their determination?

- Where is GNN in this war and peace business? Why don't we get a "news flash" when war is declared?
- I agree that we should be able to make demands on the trade screen.
- It wouldn't hurt to take some ideas from Civ4's diplomacy
- Which reminds me, why can't we target our spies, instead of just throwing money at our "CIA" and accepting whatever they come up with? Guess that's another thread, though.
