Here's a reasonably simple-step-by step

1 Find the galciv2.exe file in your GalCiv directory.
2 Right click it
3 Select Send too...
4 Select Desktop (Create Shortcut)
5 A new file will appear on your desktop. Right click it
6 Select properties
7 The properties window will open up. There is a line that says Target
8 Put quotation marks around what's there, then after the quotes put cheat. So if it originally says C:\Program Files\GalCiv\galciv2.exe it changes to "C:\Program Files\GalCiv\galciv2.exe" cheat

That should do it. Hope I was clear enough. Post here for any clarifications, I'll try to keep my eye out.

a related question, what about this Raceconfig file eveyrone mentions, what can i change with it? how do i change it? where is it? Somestimes it's just fun to set it to the highest difficulty and watch as the AI tried desperatly to keep you in line

my biggest problem is finding that .exe file cause i've checked in program files under stardock and have run a search for the file but nothing has come up

Here's the default path that the retail box version of the game uses... I can't speak for every single version, but there is an extremely good chance that you'll be able to find the file here:

C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv\galciv2.exe

There is a very high chance that Windows isn't showing the ".exe" part of the file name... that's alright... it just means that you haven't invited a geek over to your house to fix your computer yet. The icon on the file is the red and orange, like this:

There are three files that have that icon, but it's pretty easy to tell which one is galciv2. Just follow Dewwar's instructions and you'll be set.

on a side note...

I don't suppose that there is any way for me to convince you not to cheat?

I mean, I understand if you want to cheat so that you can disect how the AI works, or so that you can get a firm grasp on the economics of the game... but cheating just for the sake of having an easier game? Do you realize how much that shortens the fun aspects of games, especially TBS games? Now, I won't stop you... but seriously, you'll find the game much more fun in the long run if you build your skills against the AI instead of your skills on the cheats.

I've made the cheat short cut and it works, but when I start the game the cheat don't do nothing. Am I doing something wrong? What game modes do the cheats work in?

It works in the sandbox mode. I don't know about the campaign, and I am certain that it doesn't work in the Metaverse, though I haven't even tried.

well i don't use those Ctrl+? cheats but i wouldn't mind spanking the computer in sandbox mode on Suicide for once ....i just wanna modify how many Racial Points i can start with. and maybe Tech points?
