Diplomatic Victory: Too Easy?

I can avoid a long, drawn-out war simply by working my way up the Majesty tree, wiping out the one "troublesome" race, and allying with the rest. This saves me probably 50% of game duration.

Is there a penalty for winning diplomatically? I guess there kind of is, since you're not the lone ruler of the galaxy, but other than less points due to a shorter game, is there any loss? This seems like the easy way out and I see no reason not to go with it in every game. War is totally useless if, with enough diplomatic techs, they all work their way up to Close with me...

Yeah, there's usually that one guy that isn't as easy to persuade, but with allies or non-threatening civilizations as the only other ones left, it's not hard to forcefully take him out. Even if he surrenders to the other civs, they're my allies - not really any harm done.

Well? I'm not sure what to think.

if the game is too easy, turn up the difficulty and try again.

if the game is too short, turn of whatever victory you keep hitting so early.

if the game is both hard enough and long enough to be entertaining, i'd actually prefer to skip the "it's clear i'm going to win, but the game won't end until i grind everybody down to nothing" part of the game.

i've been cranking up the difficulty gradually, looking for the sweet spot... i turned off Influence victory, becasue that's the one i kept hitting... but i may bring it back again, once i get the difficulty right..

Or you can pass up the option alltogether. I have saved games that have a diplomatic victory available to go for a different victory. If things go south I can always go back and pick up the easy win if I want to do so.

I think that the length of a game is a big factor in scores but you have to be active in all victory categories to maximize your score. If you win diplomatic or cultural without ever fighting a war your military score may not be so good

Yeah the point is why would you? Sure its available.. but try not having allies

In my experience this is primarily a problem with high diplo races on lower difficulty settings. Try cranking up the difficulty, try playing non-diplomatic races, or simply turn the option off if you want to keep playing as you have been without tripping an easy victory.

I think you do get less points for a diplomatic victory.

War is a lot funner. A diplomatic victory seems more like a tie to me.
