Changing the Population Growth

Hey guys I have had some issues trying to slow down the population growth of my race. I have changed some attributes in the attributes XML file and tried reloading the game to see if my changes did anything and I had no luck. What my goal is, is I would like to reduce all of the races population growth from 1 turn to the next. So for example the humans population growth rate is 125 million people from turn 0 to turn 1. I would like to reduce that to maybe 5 million. I understand that there are many factors(attributes) involved with regards to population growth, but my main concern is changing the base population attribute for each race. In other words I realize that bugs will reproduce faster than humans and so their population growth attribute will be higher than that of the human race, but where can I find that attribue?

Do you all have any thoughts on which file and attribute I would need to change?

Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried giving them negative pop growth bonuses? (IE: give Terrans -80% Pop Growth and suddenly he will grow 1/5 as fast as before). I haven't tried it for negatives, but I'm pretty sure that's the only way to change population growth right now. You'd have to go through and change all the others as well, of course.

Also, the beta versions are working with a 3% population growth....drastically lowered from the 1.0x growth rate. You may not need to worry about adjusting pop growth once 1.1 is released.

I have changed the race attributes file and found the 'population growth' field. For the human race the value is set to 0. I have tried different values (0.5 and -30) for this but have had no luck. With both of those fields altered I produced the same results. 125 million increase in population from turn 0 to turn 1. I am exiting the game, changing the file with an XML editor, saving the changes and then restarting the game to test the changes. So far no luck.

I don't think you can do that. It seems the game does not go back and check the xml files after creation. I don't think it uses them at all really after creation. You'll have to start a new game. Now I don't recommend gimping the pop growth much because it will cause the AI to act quite funny. You'll see what I mean when fleets of invaders arrive with 36-128 attackers on them which is decidedly uneffective.

I updated to the Beta Version 1.1 and that took care of my concern with population growth. Thanks for the help!

Yeah, the Beta is pretty good regarding the pop growth changes and other things.
The pop growth abilities could be a bit too powerful though (even in Beta-2).

Although even in beta I think the Alterians are really descended from rabbits...they had a 71% pop growth bonus. They had a greater population than the other 5 races combined. The thought of invading all those high population planets made me quit the game...
