Starbase Defense

When my ships are fighting within starbase range I seem to be getting the attack bonus of the base but not the defense bonus. Im looking at the report after combat to determine this. am I misunderstanding something here?

Your ships need to have to have some defence in order to get the defence bonus, just like they need attack in order to get the attack bonus.
