Minor Races

Personally, as the game stands now, the Minor Races seem to just sit there with big targets on themselves. They are static, and do not seem to do much of anything. I understand why they were not allowed to colonize, as then they would be no different from the major races, aside from haivng no representation in the UP. However, I do feel that the minor races should be able to build Transports and conqueor planets that way (I do not know for a fact that they can not do this, I just know that in the 10 or so games on Tough/Intelligent I've played I have never seen them do this).

It would really be great to see a minor race able to scheme and build up a small empire, rather than just being a tech-merchant that is sitting on a high PQ planet. I am no programmer, so I do not even know if what I am suggesting is doable, but isn't there a way to simply disable the use of the colony module from all minor races and give them on of the other Major Race's AI (at random) set to a difficulty 1-2 levels below the current game setting. Given that they are slightly less intelligent than the other races, can not get other planets until they research or trade for the Planetary Invasion tech I do not see them becoming too threatening, but they would be a fun dynamic addition to the game.

To make them more colorful still, the following few additons would really add a lot to them:

- Once a Minor race reaches 5% of galaxy influence have a trigger that allows them to join the UP (essentially making them a Major Race at this point). This boost will allow for a lot more diplomacy on smaller maps where you only have 1 or 2 opponents.

-Espionage for Minor Races (both ways)

-Allow alliances with Minor Races

Essentially they would be no different from the major races aside from being slightly less intelligent and having a much slower start, I think the result would be a much more dynamic game.

Minor grip aside (pun intended), as this is my first post I do feel I need to properly express how I feel about this game. The game as a whole is outstandingly addictive! No two of my games, so far, have even been close to similar, even when I choose to play in a similar manner...nor do they tend to play out the way I intend them to. In one of my more interesting games, in which I actually had tech trading turned off (10 players, large galaxy, abundant planets/stars), I was working all game towards a Cultural Victory by building up starbases and paying the strongest military forces to fight each other (so they would be too busy to fight me). In an instance my entire game shifted into military only as the Drengin and Yor saw what I was doing and stopped fighting each other and turned on me. Totally not prepared, and unable to trade for military techs, of which I had very few I found myself having to go all out on research to catch up in the military game and lost 2 planets. I was eventually able to drive out the empires but was at constant war throughout the rest of the game until it was just the Mighty Arcean empire with 55% of the map, Terrans with about 10% and me with the remaining 35%. My cultural victory was now an impossibility, my military had become much more advanced but was far smaller and I did not have the population to take over the what seemed like a hundred or so Arcean planets. And so I had to do the only thing that was left to do...once again shift to full gear research and become immortal. Arceans sent countless ships at me non-stop but I was able to hold them back and managed to pull out a Technological Win (with no tech trading)!

The game went from culture to diplomacy (even had an ally until I cowardly let them die) to technology to miliatary and then back to technology for climatic engame. About 12 more weeks and the Arceans would have probably overwhelmed me...they were actually going after my influence starbases and my research planets. I think they were trying to lower my influence they can sneak out a cultural win, while trying to cripple my chances at the technological win. It was amazing.

Just want to say that in my last 1.0x game the Scottilingas did not colonize, but they conquered several worlds and actually were able to keep one.  They now have two planets, a mining starbase, several influence starbases, three transports hanging around, and a decent fleet that is able to kick butt in limited wars.

They appeared early on in the game - and for fun I nurtured them - kept giving them ships and money to keep the other Ai's off them; and would broker peace whenever I felt that they were in danger of being annihilated.  After a few years, they were able to hold their own - and are now in no danger of being eliminated - they are stronger than two regular Ai's who have already surrendered...

Playing at Intelligent level.

I had a huge map game in which the Independent League became a galactic power. They were beating up on every body and I wound up in a war with them. They probably had 20-25 planets.

I can't recall but that may have been in the last pre-release beta. The minors have been dumbed down a lot since then. They aren't much beyond trading and the occasional HQ planet to conquer.

I kind of miss the ability to flip some of them with culture. I think it was the Alexians that I would always culture bomb in GC1

Wow...I have never seen them do anything beyond building a few starbases and trading! I have never seen them form an Independent league or attempt to conqueor anything (though I do remember the IL from GC1). Perhaps they just need an AI boost then if they can do all that.

what'd be really nice imo, is if the minors were essentially identical to the rest of the galaxy with just 2 minor differences

no racial bonuses, just flat basic numbers as is. this would serve to handicap them in fairly significant ways i would think. start their HW with nothing on it but the capital, and 1000bc to work with, and perhaps no prediscovered techs.

other than that, no holds barred. so, they'd be starting with a rather significant handicap, and have to continue to play with a handicap as they receive no racial or gov't bonuses to help them as everyone else is helped, but if they get a good roll from the start, look out....

i'd love it, giving the snathi an opportunity every game they appear, to do more than just chatter away from the safety of their planet like the many real life squirrels they supposedly are smarter than...... true they do occasionally come out to play, as do the others, but its not often. if they came out every time, had a very real capacity to do something significant, but played at a disadvantage like that, i think it'd be perfect, you could have neighbouring minors going to war with eachother, or foming the minors alliance and gobbling up some weak major.

from a variety pow, its perfect, im just not sure how much coding would be needed, so, i don't know if that'd be very plausible or not

I think the minor races definatly need to be stronger, i dont think they should be allowd to colonize tho. They should have 2-4 planets in that one system only. Also what Amram said lol

In my recent game the fluffy Snathi annexed the dark Yor. After accomplishing this, I decided to ally them, great guys.

Just had a minor race send a freighter to trade with me and so increased my revenue, I'd call that right friendly.

You can already ally with them... but they aren't aggresive at all. I think there should be 3-5 seperate AI for all the minor races, and if you wanna make totally custom minors.... these AI's should be assigned to them....

Minors are fun, I protect them as often as possible, and ally myself with them because everyone always declares war on them about 1/2 through the game... this way I can have a treaty with one race, and fight with another without incuring the wrath of the whole populace....

I like making a minor my trading partner. That way I don't lose revenue when I end up at war with a major.

It annoys me when another major gobbles up a nice, juicy high PQ planet. (Mostly, it annoys me because if anyone gets that planet, it should be *me*). If they look like someone is about to grab a minor planet, I develop a cheap "blockader," make 8 of them, and place them around the helpless minor so the greedy Drengin (or whoever) cannot attack them without getting into a war with me.

The Vegans kicked my butt a few weks ago. They somehow started colonizing in the middle of my systems and after they parked a influnece starbase next to my capital, it was on. Un-fortantly they were built way up (actually ranked #1) and I was soundly defeated. I-league manage to get 2 planets a few days ago, but having learned that lesson, I killed them off immediately. This sort of thing seems to happen after the 3rd difficulty level.

As for alliances, you're able to ally with them but can't seem to break off the alliance. Though really, its not a lot of use to ally with them seeing 9 times out of 10 there not going to do anything but get attacked possibly sending you into a nasty war. Thats the sort of thing that got WWI started.

I totaly agree with the espinoge thing... Kind of annoying to see a minor race have laser V while I'm on laser II and I can't steal it.

I sort of agree with them joining the UP, but then I'd have just one more race voting against me....

Generally speaking, my policy towards minor races is to to use them as trading targets and generally ignore them for any other purpose. If they expand, I assess the threat and if I deem them a threat I destroy them. But if they're beng a pain to a enemy of mine, I might pass along some tech and creds to them.

I think there should be no difference from Minor and Major races...i think all races should start out as minor races and if they progress far enough they can become a major race...so when u emerge there is like one or two other major races and if you see a race begin to develop you can crush them, take them under your wing, or have nothing to do with them...it would be a much more realistic dynamic to the game and it would add a lot of fun...

Drengin are arising from a planet...what do you do? ENSLAVE THEM! hahahaha

Technically the minor assasinated the major to start the war. Oh, but how I do love assasinations in game. TAKE THAT N-1! bloody robots. And they get those crappy 2 attack "vengeance" class snipers, by which time I'm using disruptors

If it weren't for the alliances in Europe at the time, all that would have happened was Austria garrisioning more military units in the Balkans. But Russia backed up the Balkans, which brougth the Germans in to help the Austrians, the the French to help the Russians, then the English to help the Belgians after Germany decided to take a detour on their way to France.

Now that would be an intresting thing to put in game, assassinating the leaders. Put it under espinoge, if you suceed it severely destabilizes the race, if you fail you lose prestige and probably will have a war on your hands (if you were dumb enough not to use a deniable third party.)
