Newbie Question

Getting started

I am totally new to this format and I am trying it out playing the demo first. I am having trouble expanding.

I have explored the area that I can and the only planet that I can inhabit is Mars (lev 4). All of the other ones on the map outside of other races areas are all class 0. How do I expand if they are all class 0? Am I supposed to change this somehow?

Thanks, and sorry for such a newbie question

You need to start conquering other races. Take their planets and so on. But 0 planets you can't change.

To do this you need to research planetary invasion, create a troop transport, and invade that way (after destroying any ships that are defending the planet with other ships).

Alternatively you can overwhelm them with influence and hope that convert to your side

or, you can stick with what you have and go for the diplomatic or tech victories

or some combination of the above.

Enjoy your game!

It also sounds like you expanded slowly and missed on getting any other planets in the initial 'colony rush'. Perhaps if you build colony ships faster next game you can get some planets peacefully.

If your ships run to the limit of their range and you can't go further, build a starbase.

Also, consider the original setting when you started the game for the density of planets. If you set it at "abundant" you will find plenty of planets, but if at "rare" you will spend a lot of your initial turns on Earth and Mars! (There are settings in between, too ...)

I find that the game favors over-aggressive expansion at the beginning. I just purchace a colony ship every turn and gobble up every planet I can until there are none left. As my opponents can't invade until they have researched the "planetary invasion" tech, I dont even need to worry about defending them at first. I research stellar-cartography first, then propultion techs until I have my planets. I also make sure I turn military and social production to 0%, so the focus is on getting those propultion techs early. You may have to adjust this strategy for larger galaxies, but on smaller ones I have won an influence victory by accident because I was so over-extended.

Research the 'Alliances' tech. It's somewhere in that yellow diplomacy line at the top of the technology tree. Then be on very good terms with the one(s) you want to ally with. You could give them presents, like tech and ships for that, or perhaps attack their enemy. Once they really like you, you can ask for a alliance in the diplomacy screen.

If you want to achieve an 'Alliance Victory', you must make sure that you're allied with all the major races and wipe out those you aren't allied with.
