whats your highest ship level

I managed to get the first ship i produced to level 41 along with all the other ships in the fleet (same type)
it was a small hull
3 railgun mk IVs
and 1 impulse drive mkIII
at level 41 it had 76 hp the engine techs had increased its speed to 6 parsecs/turn and a fleet of 5 could take down an enemy frigate with a standerd set of fighters (i had more but my logistics ability wasnt the best at that point) i didnt farm them up to that level i just used them normaly replaceing the ones that lost and bringing the most wounded ships to a nearby planet to recover when they were low on health i no longer was useing them midway through the game because they stood no chance against the newer ships

Shouldv'e upgraded them. They keep the experience!

I think I once had something ridiculous like 72, it was Dread Lords on parade, and it was my flagship. I upgraded it's design with every technology I had (this was in the days I played evil, and used Psionic beams) and it could stand toe-to-toe with anything the Dread Lords threw at it (or so I thought)

Thet got together some fleets of ships, and went for it. I took out about 25 ships (Love defence) before it died.

But, come on, 25 dread lord ships!

I have had multiple medium ships with over 200 hitpoints in 1.0X. Don't know what level they were but if it's one hp/level, then they would have been around level 170.

Once I'm slightly on top in the galaxy regarding military techs, and ships start to survive several battles I assemble a few in a special fleet. These ones I protect by using them in battles, but not taking any risks. So I could have four good frigates in a fleet with one expendable ordinary one which I have to replace sometimes.
I also fight with this fleet with one or more fleets for backup in case my 'special' fleet runs into trouble.
With this system I create an assault fleet with high level frigates. I upgrade them and add more 'veterans' as my logistics increase. I rename the units to keep track of them if the fleet disassembles in orbit.
After a while you get an almost invincible assault fleet with frigates with 250 hps which can be sent in first to break a strong enemy army by defeating fleet after fleet without loosing any unit.
You can also use such a fleet to send in deep in enemy territory for specific missions because it is an independent strike force.
The point of this strategy is focusing of power, which is relatively difficult for the AI to implement.
You got to like using these tactics though, because it requires some organizing.

In future games I plan to have more veterans than fit in a fleet so I can use a kind of rotational system. When one veteran is down from 250 to 10 hps it takes a lot of time to repair so it would be nice to have other good ships standing by.

I often bide my time until I have a huge technological lead then build some ridiculously powerful ships. 1 fleet is usually enough to destroy every other fleet in the galaxy. (occasional upgrades are needed to change weapon and shield types) I've still not ever reached level 170 that's very impressive.
