The AI vs my starbases

GalCiv2 Forums
I was not sure where to put this post, but here it is nevertheless.
I'm currently playing a game vs Painful (6 opponents on a medium map) and there's one thing that I've noticed throughout my later games: The AI attacks my fleets with no regard for my militairy starbases and of course I crush it like a bug every time. However, it does try to sneak in and destroy them and that is smart behavior. It can actually work really well once the AI has researched efficient propulsion systems. The problem is though that I'm usually able to intercept its fleets before they can accomplish their goals. Here's what I would like the AI to do: Build offensive militairly starbases of its own and try to slowly advance on my positions with starbase support rather than to rush in and get killed. Personally I never stage a major assault on a cluster of planets without starbase backup if I know that the AI is somewhat strong ,and as Brad Wardell pointed out himself, humans are better at focusing fire than AIs so I really think the AI is at a huge disadvantage here.
That said, I love how it behaves otherwise. In my current game, the remaining 3 AIs (Thalan, Drakh and Iconians) are all neutral to me at the moment. However, the Drath started putting together a huge fleet behind my borders. I figured it was about to attempt something sinister despite our neutral relations, so I began mass-producing my best ships and put them in fleets in the vicinity of the Drath fleet and I upgraded my militairy starbases to counter the AIs new missile weapons. The Drath eventually withdrew its fleet to a nearby planet and all was cool again. Loved it!
No game has caught me like this for years and years. Sure, WoW did in terms of time spent playing, but it never had me enjoying every minute of it like Galciv2 does.
