"The selected component is too large to fit on the ship design"

Cant upgrade my designed ships

Every time I design a new ship it works alright until I save and reload and then I can no longer update any of my designed ships. It always says "THE SELECTED COMPONENT IS TOO LARGE TO FIT ON THE SHIP DESIGN"

Is this happening to others? It happens to me 100% of the time.

I get that too with the beta. Seems to happen with saved designs that are loaded in at startup. Can update fine initially, but once I continue from a save, I get the "too large" message. However, custom ship designs I create from scratch during the game can be updated after continuing from a save.

I get that with totally new designs. It seems that it isn't taking into account miniturization when calculating whether a part would fit or not. I may have 10 spots left, the engine could origionally be 11 slots big but thanks to miniturization its 9 slots. I'll try to put it on and I get the error message. Seems to be completely reproducable with all hull types and all items.

This is a known bug in 1.1(b). Hopefully it will be resolved and a new beta released shortly as the bug does make the game unplayable, and as such i have given it up until the new beta arrives

It doesnt make it "unplayable". You just have to design new ships instead of using the upgrade function. It only matters if you add a lot "extras" to make the ships look cool, so thats really all youre missing out on.

I've asked this question on irc channel, but noone could anserw me, so I would like to post it here:

I started the campaign missions. In the first mission right off the bat I emerged into starship designer. There I tried to make some simple colony ships but obviously with some nifty additional parts. After puting an ion engine and colony module I ran out of space. I was shocked as I previously saw that the original design had 3 Life supports + 1 Ion Drive + 1 Colony module. I've tried to reproduce the same design but I failed due to lack of space. The only thing I can think of is that the original designs assume that you have the miniaturization tech, but as miniaturization is quite deep in the tree. . . The fact is that you somewhat gain an unfair advantage. If I am wrong - please respond.

Yes, Im playing 1.1 with no mods. Buy if there are people out there designing ships and upgrading them fine... maybe its got to do with my settings... Or that im a custom race?

This is THE bug that made me changing back to 1.0x, I'm the kind of guy who can live with CTDs but gotta have good looking ships!

I believe a work around is to only show the functional parts of the ship you're upgrading (middle icon/button on the top right of screen). If you press that first then add parts I think you'll find it will let you add them. At least it seems to work for me. YMMV.

Will try that! Thanks

Ehh in which version of the beta is this fixed though? Gotta give version numbers if possible is it .010 or the one that will follow that one.
