There is no active multiplayer currently. You can only compare scores (as I understand it). If you wanted to hack something, there's a way to take over aliens for a hotseat game.

Only if there is enough demand. They said that they will add it as an expansion if enough people want it. Playing the game online woudl cause them to scale back much of the functionality in order to streamline the time between turns though.

streamline, psh, I say add a button taht says multiplayer, and lets see how many people prefer a human player versus a computer.

Humans, oh jeez i'm losing, I think ill just disconnect or take really long to make my next move
Computer, oh jeez i'm losing, I think i'll just give my planets away.

Humans, ha I got you with my sneak attack of ships with 1 gun but 50 movement bet you didn't see that coming.

Computers, fear my ships with one of each type of gun and one of every defense surely they will crush your ships specializing in one area giving 4 time as much power.....

But given how long games can take they'd have to create some sort of matching system with a ladder where you submit your turns rather then have to sit down and play it all out at once.

I'd still like to see some sort of multiplayer even if it's as rudimentary as your forced to email each other your turns.
Really because I want a challenge and the computer can't deliver a intelligent game, but partly because it's more fun to beat a human

you're right of course. Getting online multiplayer in the game and balanced is as simple as adding a button

I don't see how the multiplayer minority guys can stand the delays in turn based games like this where turns can take 10s of minutes! Games take long enough single player. I'd never have the patience or large contiguous time slots for multiplayer turn based games. Starcraft? Sure. UT2k4? Sure. GC2 or Civ ? Ugh, run run run!!!

Oh we're not that bad, though I will admit starting at an unchanging screen for 10 mins waiting for them to make a move would be kind of annoying (and I use to play chess lol). That's why I suggested an upload turn type thing. You make your turn upload it to their servers and then your opponent has a set time limit to log in, download the turn, and make his moves. If he doesn't in the time set it would auto tick it for him based on the last orders he entered. If he misses like 3 turns or something he would be declared inactive and it would be marked on his profile. After a while you can see who goes inactive and who plays the games through.
Simple and effective.
I played a game called mageborn once that was similar. I played one game that lasted for 6 months. Quite enjoyable.

I wouldn't mind a PBEM option, but you're right in that realtime multiplayer would be tedious at best without some sort of stramlining/automation

Online would be horrible. I'd be very surprised if anyoen managed to get through 10 turns in a 8 player map 10 player map
Hot seat (real hot seat, not the complicated cheating thingy) would be a great addition though. But the games still GRRREAT!

a game that lasted 6 months??? You are one crazy cat!

Seriously though, for a good game you really want more than 2 races. Either you go 2 players and 6 AI (does 1 out of 7 opponents being flesh & blood really make things that much better? How about if they go out early? Do you abandon and retry, or what?) or you go several flesh opponents, and that's got to take you like 3 weeks just to get past the colony rush. lol.

I just can't see myself being deranged enough to enjoy that. (I'm kidding - mostly. lol) Still, people used to and probably still do play chess via post (real paper letters), so I guess it takes all sorts.

Everything in this game is designed to work for single player. Unless they drastically overhauled it to utilize a "We-Go" system, I don't see it being remotely worthwhile as a multiplayer game. I'd far rather Stardock work on expanding the single player content than spend hundreds of man-hours overhauling the game for proper multiplayer play. In the ammount of time it would take them to do that, they could probably flesh out an entirely new multi-turn planetary invasion model where you can make strategic decisions on the planet's grid, etc. There are so many more things they could do with single player that it makes no sense to waste time forcing multiplayer into the game.
