Tech Tree

No chart?

Well I bought this game 2 days ago at GameStop. It was the only copy they had. It was not the 'collectors' edition (at the time I didn't know there was a collectors edition).

I must say that I can't believe the 'regular' game does not have a tech chart in the box. I'm having a terrible time managing my techs to research, or even determining what to research. I know there are a hundred way to sort the techs in game, but I need to see the big picture. For example, I want bigger ships, but I don't know exactly what techs are required to build a big ship. So I just keep pecking away at techs hoping that sooner or later a larger ship will appear in my starbase. After three games I still having unlocked one. If I had a chart, and I knew what techs were needed I could 'map out' a desired tech plan, but the way it is now I'm just guessing and getting frustrated.

Is there some database somewhere that tells what's needed (tech wise) for each improvement/module/ship?

Is there a copy of a tech tree somewhere?

Thanks.

You can find the Tech Tree at the wiki site: Link

Ship size is researched in the engineering tree. But I'm thinking what you're really asking is what techs are needed for specific core ship designs, like "Star Fury" and "Battlecruiser." As far as I know, that information isn't available anywhere. Don't worry about trying to get the core ships. Custom design your own ships to suit your needs.

It would be nice if you could zoom out in the tech tree screen.

This would make a GREAT FAQ for GameFAQ.com. (hint, hint)

Thanks for the link, very helpful!

A link with all core designs and their requirements was posted, if you can find it. I know I saw it.

The Galactopedia has that information (about the core ships), you might want to check that out.

I found the same irritating at first, but after a few games you get used to where you want to go with Tech. You can scan around the "tree" by holding the left mouse button down and moving. I know it's not the same as a map, but it ain't bad.....

you can by clicking the "full screen" option on the research screen. You can't see what it unlocks, but you do see all the techs.
As for bigger hulls, go down the path of advanced hulls-medium sized hulls-etc, but t win the game you pretty much have to build your own ships

I really wanted to stay with the pre-build ships for a while. I figured I'd end up making some ship with all weapons but not enough engine, no shields, etc. and cost me a lot of money in the long run. I figured I'd use the pre-builts and just see what I need and what works. My problem, of course, is I'm not unlocking any pre-builts.

Thanks for the link on Galactopedia, it looks great, but I just don't trust running .exe files on my PC unless I really know the source well. No offense, I'm just overly causious these days.

I guess I could try a large galaxy, set the other races to 'stupid' and research (and take notes) on my own time.

Thanks for your responses.
