We'll I can't edit my post, but I meant to add, I read that you could only play as terran, games were limited to small galaxies and limited to 150 turns. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Gamespot's sample gameplay video dates back to Feb. 2005!!! Stardock needs to provide them with an updated video showing off the released game.

Sweet a demo :O I wonder what it will be like, I may have to play it for novelty reasons!

The demo does have some restrictions:

  1. You can only play as the Terran Alliance
  2. The galaxy is configurable but the galaxy size is not (small galaxies)
  3. The # of opponents is limited to I think 3 to 5 (can't remember which). This helped (a lot) with the download size.
  4. You can't play on the Metaverse
  5. No campaign (of course).  No scenarios or custom maps.
  6. Game ends after around 150 turns (which is a lot of turns but not unlimited).

Honestly I Remember the demo for galciv 1 and i'm not sure what the turn limit was but it wasn't enough to get me hooked. I didn't get sa sufficient taste for the game. Having a turn limit is probably not necessary in a teaser of this sort, 150 turns may seem like a lot but not when your just trying it out for the first time. There are a few other ways to limit it such as 5 15 minute spans like moo2 or moo 3 had I forget which it was but honestly just limiting the other factors was probably enough. I think letting people play 5 complete games inside those parameters should give them the feel they are looking for.

I hope you have additional successes here btw, but I bought the game because of your games and movies prior to release showing your story etc. I think what swayed me were those, especially when you put in your galactic events (like the torians having a revolution and the UP vote about exploiting native races etc.

It says the demo will be released on Gamespot which you have to pay to get access to! YIKES!

Surely we'll be able to download it from other places as well for free won't we?

Gamespot and Gamespy are notorious for trying to get people to subscribe to their 'premium' web services.. you don't have to have those to get access. You can sign up for a basic account and get it.

I think Avault.com might have it once it comes out. But Gamespot's basic access downloads aren't horrible, and theres no waiting lines (I'm looking at you GameSpy...)

They may get it first, but I would imagine it would eventually go to all the major game demo sites.

Will the demo be updated to 1.1 when 1.1 is finalized, and other versions subsequently? This may sound like a dumb question (since I own the game) but it's actually pretty important, so I'd appreciate a response, if you've made a decision.

It's forty dollars, who knows what society will be.

Depends on exactly what you're asking. While there will be a pay client, there will also be a free client, so one already-announced answer is free. If you're specifically referring to the pay client, then no, we don't know how much it will be.

I am slightly disapointed with the demo , it is tedious to download, the size isnt the issue but the speed of it. Gamespot are realy slow for me, and i am not paying to simply download some free demos. the download is crawling along at 20kb a sec , taking at least 2 hours to download. where as it took 25 min to download the 400mb+ Age of empires demo. I just wondered why the choice was taken to give them priority to the demo?
