Noob player trying to get a hold on the game. Help needed

Bought the game, and I just have the feeling that there's a great game waiting for me.
But i can't get it right. I start the game, small galaxy, 4 opponents, Im human.
And while I can find my way around on earth, building factories etc., I'm really on a blind spot as to what to do with the ships.
I would love to try and and have one more planet, but all the other planets are either 0's or occupied by the ai player.
I'm missing something, but what.
Is there a noob walktrough somewhere?
And i mean on a really basic level, like a complete hold in hand through one game

You should restart your game and use a bigger galaxy and more usable planets.
Bigger galaxy because then you gain more time for expansion, you'll loose, because of beeing unexperience, but this HAS to be Your game after this will be MUCH better, because then you know what you are doing.
I don't know any newbie step by step guide, but there are the tutorials in the game, they should explain the most needed points.
The ships are for exploration, just send them to outer space and you'll see other planets, take a look on the minimap at the bottom-right, the white dots are stars having planets, send your flagship to them.

The first part of the game is the colony rush. You want to get as many colonies as you can before your opponents do.

There are walk throughs around here somewhere, but basically as bladevenom stated, colony ruah.

First - buy a colony or buy a factory .. this depends
Second turn - buy colony...
Use up your money if you have to and buy and send the colonies out.
Dont worry about warships or anything in the initial phase, just rush and grab as many planets as you can.

Planet setup, diversify initially... in other words have at lease one of each on your planets then as you expand, find some good quality planets and specialize.

I suggest you read up on some of the articles on economy in the forums, that will explain alot on how the game works.
The way I see it, controlling the economy is key in the game.

Basically this game can pretty much be decided in the first 20 turns on a tiny region game. I've played 2 games last night, both in a tiny region with abundant habitable planets but few planets and I won against 2 random empires on normal with little problem.

For your first game get a tiny region, put everything to occasional and have 1 opponent not Dreguin. Try this and you'll have enough time to explore and get a grip with the game mechanics, the ai won't attack you for at least 200 turns.
