Ship Designs

2 questions really

Been playing for 2 days now and I have 2 questions on ships.

Once a ship has been created, is it updated as tech is increased. I had some pirates in my space and sent 2 fleets to meet them. One fleet (older ships) were blow away doing little damage. The other fleet actually took out the ships with little damage taken. Did the newer ships have better techs and that's why they succeeded? Could the older ships have been updated?

How do I get bigger ships? The biggest ship I can ever build is Destroyers, which are wimps. I research everything I can, but I always win the game before any bigger ships can be made. Exactly what techs are needed to build the next biggest fighter ship? Is there a graph or chart of these techs somewhere? They are hard to follow in the game.

Ships don't autoupgrade. Do you design you own ships? The core ships can be lacking and aren't adjusted to fit your needs. While it'd be neat to have ships autoupgrade components, there are many problems that would arise from it. The core ships are mostly needed by the campaign and custom maps that need to have a ship already designed if it's in at the start of the map. Making your own ships is part of the fun User Created ships are generally better than core designs.
Having said that, with the demand for better core ships seemingly high, my mod (not revealing the name on these forums yet ) will sport a wide selection of core ships. I'm partially contradicting myself, but I'll need them for the large campaigns it will include.
As for the tech tree, you'll learn it more as you keep playing.

For bigger ships, specifically, you need bigger hulls. The progression is roughly - Advanced Hulls, Medium Hulls, Superior Hulls, Large Hulls, Massive Hulls...or something like that. Hull Tech is what's needed to get bigger ships capable of mounting more weapons. For more stuff on those ships, go for Miniaturization (starting with Basic Computing or something like that). And for more ships in a fleet, Logistics...or, you can do what I do and go for a massive Logistics game. Nothing quite as satisfying as seeing dozens of ships duking it out for supremacy. XD

Sometimes the newer ships can be better because some techs (and the Armor Plating Trade Good) add to the hitpoints, and they only affect new construction from what i've seen.
