Navy/Coast Guard ranks: Ensign, Lieutenant JG, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, Commander, Captain, Admiral
Typically, Sci Fi shows use Naval ranks for ship staff and Army ranks for pilots and gropos. It gets real confusing sometimes when Captains salute Commanders...

Ironically, as often as they get the ranks correct, they don't get the ship sizes correct
Frigates are smaller than Destroyers, Destroyers smaller than Cruisers, and Cruisers smaller than Battleships.... How many shows have you seen that have a big menacing destroyer and a much smaller cruiser (Babylon 5s Hyperion Cruiser vs Omega Destroyer)?
