Ground invasions

Correct me if I'm missing something, but is there any downside to sustaining massive casualties when conducting a successful invasions? Are the surviving personnel adding to the POP pool? It seems that the troops are as disposable as kleenex.

Surviving troops form the initial population, yes. As well, if you have enough left so that one of your transports wasn't really needed, that transport remains in the space you attacked from. Smaller capacity transports can be useful in this respect, since you'll be more likely to still have some left after the fight.

with the new patch and the 3% pop growth, it'll be vital to keep troops alive, as 3% of 100mil is only 3 mil. A pop increase per turn of 3 is nothing. But it's true that currently, with a high enough moral, troops aren't worth much. I take it you're an evil civ?
