MultiThreaded AI

What is it?

Occasionally, such as in the discussion of the reviews, I hear about multithreaded AI. I'm somewhat familiar with the theory of multithreading, though out-of-date.

My question is in regards to GC2. Do I need specific hardware/software to support this?
In the case of AI, what does multithreading do for me? Increased speed, intelligence, or both?
