any helpful tips for me

Hi people this is my 1st post.Finally got my hands on the game 2day bin waiting 2 weeks 
.Had a quick go on it earlier (2 hours) and i found it really hard which is a good thing.Just had a few problems upgrading ships and starbases.I wanted to upgrade my flagship with some nice new weapons i had researched but i cudnt.I had the same problem with starbases.I would build 1 and research a load of modules but cudnt put them on it.Just wondering if im going bowt it all wrong.Any gametips would be greatly appreciated as well off anybody 
.I have a full day 2moz to try again so i want to make a better impression on it.Thank you all
