You shouldn't need to use gas if you have double troop transport modules and they're both fully loaded. Gas just hurts the planet quality, but it does ensure a victory.

then I created a troops transport with double module and put it out of sensor range near the planet.

I am not sure if you got this right. In my game at least, the Dreadlords seem to have a ridiculous sensor range knowing exactly when a ship is created and sending their fleets to destroy it (this is in the latter part of the game when they are in domination mode). I am sure that sometime using this tactic you would be surprised and a battleship would eat your transport for breakfast!

Not to mention that I dont recall there being any PQ4 planets in the campaign??

Oh yeah, you are totally right I just checked... although it's called "Kwilas I" on mine. Apologies!

I like doing this with core detonation. Then when I take it I'll give it the the dregin to manage. Nothing like a class 2 planet to mess up your morale/economy.
