Can someone explain Hull space?

I just dont get it sometimes!!

Ok... I have a cargo hull and it has a capacity of 55. I put on a few engines, a module and it says 47/55 but its all red!!!!

Essentially its telling me that even though it hasn't reached capacity yet that I have gone over budget and cannot make the craft. Why????

Whats worse, I noticed that if I put a module on AFTER the engines it *sometimes* goes red, but if I put the engines on last then the exact same design will be acceptable (yet still I cannot get 55/55 capacity).

So can someone please explain to me how the size of items and the capacity of a hull fit together?

The red background is a warning that you can not add the component you currently have selected to the hull without going over the space limit.

So, in your case, you can't add another engine.

Try switching to another object, say whatever life support you have, and see if the slider changes.

I've noticed this, but very rarely. Sometimes when I'm trying to add an engine to the ship and there are 8 slots open and the engine requires 8 slots it won't let me. And selecting another part then reselecting the engine doesn't help.

I haven't encountered that yet, myself, and I assure you that I've taken maximum advantage of many designs.
Maybe the game rounds off the size in the GUI (the number you see) but still adds the fractions left over after miniaturization is taken into account when you actually add it to the hull? Dunno.

All I do is right click which de-selects the component I current have (ie engine) and it STILL reports it in red, doesn't show the second underlying bar (which indicates the space it will take up) and STILL is in red and I am way under 55.

Or can I still save it regardless...

I think the problem might be when the bar is displaying in red to be honest

Try saving it regardless, it should work as long as the numbers say 54 or less out of 55.

And btw, I thought miniturization actually just made the base hulls larger instead of the componets smaller number wise? Same effect but easier to manage.

I wonder if there's some fractional thing going on we can't see sometimes (due to miniturisation). I've had a few designs where I've managed to fit size 8 engines into 7 remaining space, life support modules that say they are size 5 but only occupy 4, weapons that say size 11 but don't fit into 11 space...

Either that, or some quite nasty typos/bugs...

the sizes are based off calculations, they arent fixed text. I havent experienced any of those problems yet, even with miniaturization. I think the rounding error is the likely culprit, as that's the only thing that makes sense. somewhere it's showing you an integer, but continuing to use a decimal in the calculations. perhaps it's fixed in the beta, just hang onto that save game and try again after it.

No, its definately a BUG.

My interface colour is blue so thats not the problem.

The issue is interesting. even though I have deslected the component, it still believes that is the component I want and thus it will leave the bar red even though I am not adding any more to it at all.

I can still save it (so I found out)... its just the indication of the bar that appears wrong.

usualy I just right click to get rid of the component on the curser and try again

I suspect though that their is a bug in that something is being rounded down on the display thats suposed to be rounded up(one of the components)
