Transport Bug/Exploit

Here's what I found:

When you equip a transport with weapons (what I'm using has black hole generators, hyperwarp engines, and 5 advanced troop mods - I haven't tried this in a fresh game yet) and send it to a DEFENDED planet which you're not currently at war with... after the declaration of war you automatically invade the planet without choosing any options for planetary attacks and *completely* bypassing all defenders that planet may have. The behavior (by the look of it) is that the declaration is because you're attacking their units, but once you get past that the game reads that you have a transport attacking a planet, so skips straight to the invasion screen. I've reproduced this attack different people.

I have a save game documenting this as well... though it should be easily reproduced.

It's not a bug, though it definitely is an exploit. There really should be penalties for doing such things, such as condemnation by the rest of the United Planets and perhaps a slip in ethical alignment towards the evil end (not much of an issue if you're evil anyway, but it's in-character).

Yeah. It's an exploit that makes sense though, I mean, Hitler did the same thing to Russia, etc.

When you launch a surprise attack on someone who does't expect it, it's pretty easy to slip past thier defenses. That's sort of how invasion works.

Imagine you've pre-positioned this for *every* major star system of your neighbor, then declare war...

definitely an exploit... perhaps add a % chance of above sudden invation successfully happening (about 10%)?
and add "evil" to your character...

and other AI players should remember that your above exploit, and be on guard...

***and AI players can do the same to You?

on higher difficulty levels if you try to position your transports next to their planets they will declare war and hand you back your transports on a platter

Its definitely an exploit if the starships orbiting the planet do nothing to stop you

Its less of an exploit than a bug in my eyes because you *can't* attack the planet (if its defended) during peacetime with a transport unless it has weapons on it - only by adding some weapons can you bypass an enemy fleet (and only when you're at peace with them).

The only real way that I see to work it (strategically) is to throw enough people to take out capitals in one shot... that or just going after minor races.

Try it out - take a normal transport, try to invade a defended planet (during peace) - doesn't work. Then put a weapon on that transport and try again...

Oh, I somehow didn't notice the part about the planet being defended. In that case it is both a bug exploit and a gameplay quirk exploit.

Yeah if it works as Benjamin said, bypassing all the ships in orbit, then its a bug. Probably such an important bug that it needs to be sent to Stardock! Well spotted!

Heh... actually comes from me playing a cakewalk game to see how much I can screw with the score... but yeah

Try it yourself and tell me if it works

Not if your transports have a move of 10+ and you position them like 8+ squares away. Then alpha-strikes work just fine even on high difficulty levels.
