Stardock! Core ship design suggestion!

As it is now the core ship designs are pretty useless, unless you quickly need 1 defender totake out a troop transport or something..
How bout making it so that the core ships upgrade themselves whenever a new component research is done??

For example the starfury, which currently is exactly the same as the defender except for the hull/hitpoints, yet they both require the same maintenance (1bc), so its pretty useless..
What if it would automatically upgrade its engines (as new engines are researched and offer faster speed as long as it canfit on the ship), and its weapons (same thing there)?

Now we could have quick access to good ships with the latest availible tech that can be fitted onto it!
There could also be a quick-button next to the core designs, to swich between the best fit-able projectile, beam, or missile weapon and/or defence component that is currently availible.

Read and agreed.
Or just make an "auto-obsolete core design" option, coz that's what I do anyway when I see them.

I second BulenW's post. I'd like to not even have to see core designs.

On a side note, when you select "Core" in the shipyard and obsolete one, it takes you back to the full ship listing. It's kind of annoying when I'm trying to obsolete the whole list of core ships.

You can make your own core ships if you feel like doing a little editing. I also explain in a later post on the thread how to make core designs not show up. Core designs are primarily in for the campaign and scenarios as you sometimes start with ships at the beginning.

Or we can download ships from the library to fill in the gaps of new ships becoming available in the tech tree.

Well, i think they need to set it to auto upgrade all designs.

Like on Master of Orion 2, you just click on the design, then the game automatically applies the latest equipment (engines, shields, armour, sensors, fuel cells etc.), but weapons and other stuff need to be applied by you.

Even more better is to have 'Clear All' Button to clear all stuff from the design.

Making the core designs dissapear might not be such a good idea, because of the one useful core design: the colony ship. it has more on it than you can put on a cargo hull at that point in the game, and if it wasnt there, it would probably put you at a bit of a disadvantage.

Not true, the core colony ship has 3 basic supports, 1 hyperdrive, and a colony module. That only takes up 48 of 55. It's not even calculated properly, because if you match the design exactly you gain an extra .5 range at no extra cost. Depending on your starting techs, you can make a far superior colony ship.
Deleting core designs will cause the game to crash. My post (#6) on that thread shows how to remove core ships from the build list. In normal games, you will always start with a flagship and a colony ship regardless of removing core ships from the list.

The core design colony ship has 2 colony modules on it, not one

It only looks like it has two. Can you load 1000 population on it like a ship with 2 colony modules could? Core ships can be made to look like anything. User created ship could also probably be made to look different than what it is, since it uses the same "design" file.

It was my understanding that if you saw a module on a ship, that meant the module was actually on the ship. I'd need to check this in-game, but I'm pretty sure that a design with two visible colony modules must actually have two colony modules. Is there some way to add equipment to the model without adding it to the design of the actual ship?

What the ship looks like is kept in a seperate file from what the ship actually has on it. The core ships were probably design to look better. The only way for the user for achieve this right now is through some editing. If you want to test this, create two different ships (even different hulls) and save them with different names. Quit the game and goto My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\ships. Delete the one of your designs you created (only the .shipcfg) and rename only the .shipcfg to the one you deleted. If it's a terran ship, the .shipcfg file will have a S0_UD_ before the name and a number at the end (don't remove the number). Delete the .shipclass file of the one you renamed to make sure it doesn't show up (it might crash without a .shipcfg I haven't tested that). Make sure you use two names you'll remember, but won't confuse with any other ship you've named in the past. There might be a lot of ships in the folder if you've created a lot and never cleared them out.
