Ship upgrades

Greetings,

One stupid question:

It is about the core ships availables. Let's say I research a new engine. Will it be automatically on the next, let's say constructor or fighter that I build?

What about the weapons?

No. If you want to use a new component you have to add it to or upgrade your ship design. The reason why it is not automatically updated is because new components may take up more or less space, or have a different cost. Core ships cannot be upgraded, though. You'll have to create a new design of your own. When upgrading one of your own designs, give it a slightly different name. Overwriting existing names can cause problems.

Another question along this line, if you create an upgrade to an existing ship line then upgrade existing ships to the new standard, why don't the upgraded ships take the new name of the upgraded ship?

I think the answer to that Kent Henson, is that they believe new updates should take the same ship name but with a distinguished version. Ie. MyFighter MkII, III, IV, etc.
This does make sense somewhat when you're reusing the ships in another game.

If you manual renamed all your ships. then went to upgrade them, you would have to rename them all over again. The ship class is shown in the details.
