Keeping the People Happy

Me again, sorry...

I can't seem to keep all my people happy, my approval rating at the mo is 47% even though my taxes are at a low 15%.

I've also built loads of entertainment tiles on my planets but this just resolves it short term.

Can anyone help??

The problem, most likely, is that your planets are overpopulated.

Each planet can accommodate a certain number of people, depending on its quality. If you construct farms to increase your population 'cap' above this sustainable number, you run the risk of driving down your population's morale; this will ruin your approval rating.

Maximum populations are outlined here:

In your colonies, hover the mouse over the morale, and it will tell you what's causing the unhappiness.
A good rule of thumb is to have one entertainment tile per food tile.
If you are in a large amount of debt, this lowers your population moral.

Actually, the one morale to farm ratio is a little off because with two farms you will need to about 3 to offset the morale hit.

# of farms min # entertainment
.......0----------------------->1
.......1----------------------->2
.......2----------------------->3
.......3----------------------->5
.......4----------------------->6

Why so many? becuase the morale penalty you get per billion people increases as population goes up (its exponential) at 5 billion its a -9% at 10 billion its about 25% 20 billion is almost 70%

Granted, these numbers I am giving may seem a little high, but I try to keep my tax rate around 70% or more when I can.

You can't keep your tax rate over 70%. (At least I can't.) It is capped at 69%, because people were taking advantage of morale resources. At 70% morale suddenly drops, but 69% is where I usually keep my taxes too. (It is funny to see morale of 80-90% at 69% taxes and 15% at 70% taxes.)
