Tiny Ships in later game

Do they have a use?

I was thinking about how I could make a more robust fleet production and it occured to me: there always seems to be a "lead ship" that gets all the fire. Once that one is destroyed, then they move onto the next target and proceed to burn it down.

In that sense, is there a way to designate who the lead ship is? Do they automatically target the largest vessel?

If that was possible, I was hoping I could try making a fleet with a gigantic hulled ship loaded for the haul with defenses to take all of the heat while using a well defended large utility ship or two and the rest of the fleet being expendable tiny ships with no armor to deal the damage.

The fleet attacks the most dangerous/most vulnerable ship.

So if you stacked a ship with loads of shields and no weapons they would just ignore it till the dangerous ones are dead.

They would go for the ship which is easiest to kill, but hands out the most damage relative.

Usually if you watch they will take out the fighters first, and then larger ships. This is because fighters are easy to destroy but usually have decent damage output. Putting shields on a ship essentially "scares off" enemies from targetting that one first, instead they go for softer targets.

Eg if you have a fighter with 10HP and a 3 power lazer, no shields and a 30 HP destroyer with 5 power lazer and no shields they will go for the figher first.

Ideally all your fleet should have defences if you can fit them on, but its a balance between packing a punch and lastability. I usually put some defences on of the primary weapon of the civ im fighting against if i have room, but always make sure the ships have a decent damage output first.

Thats how i understand it all anyway! Hope that helps some.

If you have 3 of the same ship exactly, 9.99 times out of 10 it will either go for a random one or for 1 that has the least hp (either through exp or from damage).

Sometimes, if the damage on one of your ships gets fairly high but theres a lower level ship in the stack, they'll go for the lower level one first, even though they have better chance of killing your damaged veteran.
