Newb Question: Middle Mouse Button? Er... I don't have one...

Hm, hopefully this isn't a double post, I thought I posted already but I didn't see it on the forums. Anyways...

I just got the game and love it but I don't have a middle mouse button and can't figure out another way to rotate the galaxy. I have 8 buttons on my mouse but none of them seem to work. Is there a way to reconfigure the rotation button to one of my mouse buttons or maybe a way to rotate the map via keyboard?

A recent survey showed that there are 243 persons on Earth that still have a 2 button mouse. All of them seem to have bought GC2.

Seriously, If your mouse happens to have a scroll wheel it will usually work as the third button if not, the only fix for this is to buy a new mouse.

In most mouse configuration tools, there is a way to set what a mouse button does. The left mouse button is usually set to do the thing called "Left Mouse button". The same goes for the right mouse button.

What you need to do is set one of your mouse buttons to do the thing called "Middle Mouse button".

Check under Control Panel, Mouse to see if you have an option to set it there. If not, your mouse probably came with software that will let you assign functions to those 8 buttons. (you can also download that software from the manufacturer's website.)

If your mouse has a scrollwheel, check if you can push/click it. If so, that should be your middle mouse button.

I have a pretty recent version of the Microsoft Intelli mouse. The one where the scroll wheel doubles as the middle button. The trouble with that is that it is NOT a very smooth button. Infact, I pretty much have to lean forward in my chair to bring enough weight down on the button to get it to click. I've got two more of these mice, and their about the same trigger weight.

I find it frustrating that I sometimes have to click this button 4-5 times to get it to grab in the ship design window befor it will grab and rotate the ship. I think I will try reconfiging one of the side buttons to do this.

I'm just going to say right now that it is a usability flaw that camera rotation is only possible using the middle mouse button. It is a good thing the back up rotation controls are in the ship editor or I would be in real trouble.
I am sure it is true most people have a middle mouse button but what if the middle mouse button is poorly made or broken? Should the user have to replace their mouse to use a certain game feature? Obviously not.

I trust the issue will be fixed in a future version, I realize it is a minor issue and overall the UI for the game is very good.

Jemelby, I have that mouse, i understand....I gave up using the middle button.

I have no middle mouse button and have no intention of replacing my beloved marble mouse to get one. Unfortunately logitech is discontinuing the drivers for my device so that I have no way of remapping the middle mouse button. I also do not have a scroll wheel. Since I have windows xp 64 I am stuck with the microsoft default drivers which do not allow the remapping of mouse buttons to other functions. What is really needed here, and is standard with most games is a way to remap keyboard keys to emulate various game/mouse events. I do have a third party program that can remap mouse keys to keyboard events so some kind of standard keyboard mapping ability would be most welcome and would help those of us with non standard pointing devices
