Tech Tree Streamlining

I enjoy this game overall, but I feel that the tech tree could use a bit of tweaking. The interface to navigate the techs is clumsy, and there seem to be an awful lot of techs that have no real gameplay benefit other than to facilitate other techs, or offer some interesting new 3D widget to my shipyard. It's very frustrating to spend weeks researching a tech that sounds like it offers something valuable, only to find it provides no meaningful gameplay benefit at all. (Granted, real-life R&D is a lot like that, but this is a game, so it should be a bit more fun than real life)

I think a ruthless pruning of the tech tree might help both navigation (by making the chart smaller) and gameplay.

The problem I have with Tech Resaerch is that you find a new item. It says the Tech leads to a new toy but you can't have it till you get more techs. The question WHICH ONES. You can't be expected to wander around the Tech Tree blindly looking for a new toy!

Well the tech tree is interesting. I've found that every new tech gives you a new building, ship component, or ability. I haven't come across a "useless" tech yet.

The navigation of the tree does leave a bit to be desired. Maybe it should collapse and expand like a Tree View in a windows application. That would at least make it a bit more managable than its current state. A simple Tree View would be awsome, with the Major Categories being first, and the sub categories under that, and then under each of them all the techs.

Perhaps an Icon next to the techs to denote that it provides an Ability, a Ship Component, an Improvement, and/or a Wonder... er I mean a "Galactic Achievement"
