my Class 10 capital
- Colony Capital x 1
- Starport x 1
- Basic Factory x 3
- Entertainment x 1
- Research Lab x 3
the rest depends of the bonus tiles, maybe i'll even have 4 factories, maybe even 5 and manufacturing capital, depends on the game...

Then for Mars (Class 3) I do the following:
- Initial Colony x 1
- Basic Factory x 1
- Entertainment x 1
- Research Lab x 1 (and if i can have soil enchancement all other labs, no starport)
-----------------------
after that, i basicly have <6 class planets like mars

6 to 10 i build whatever comes to my mind, probably something that i don't have enough, allways first 2 factories and starport, possibly all factories, one entertainment and starport or only 2 factories, entertainment and the rest labs...

over 10 i build 3 factories, 1 starport, 1-2 farm, 2-3 entertainment and the rest of it is for economy bonus, possibly even 1 more farm and 1 more entertainment buildings, depends on the PQ (bigger PQ, more farms and entertainments...)

I'm curently winning games on painful and crippling, so i probably know what I'm doing, and yes, i like entertainment centers...

"Broke" is such loaded language to use how about "issue" as more appropriate word. It is as they say, "one man's trash is another mans treasure". Anyway, it’s a moot point once the patch comes out.

Also, I find that cash is definitely not my friend. I never have more than 2000 BC in my treasury, and that's when I've got 5 trade routes (which no one is attacking). When this happens, I can only use the cash to buy maybe a constructor or a cheap heavy fighter. Meanwhile, the AI is zooming around the galaxy with scores and scores of fleets. Why is their economy so damn strong?

Yep - I agree... but.. keeping 2000bc in the bank? I'm happy if I can just keep a positive cash flow. Couple of thoughts:

1) Fiddle with tax rates: you *can* survive a low popularity for a little while.
2) Play with the sliders and the planet focus buttons. You need to pay attention to it because it changes as improvements are completed.
3) Sell tech that helps the other empires with trade and planet quality - this later will help with:
4) Trade. Lots of freighters. Lots of trade routes.

It seems counter-intuitive to "help" a potential enemy, right? But since trade is based on the strength of both ends of the trade route, you do need to make sure you have strong trading parties.

Or just dial down the difficulty

They have already invaded a couple of my planets and I havent even built a ship with weapons on it yet.

That is your problem. You have to build some token ships with a weapon on them, because if you have no military, your empire starts to look like an easy target. Make a half dozen ships and you will see that it buys you alot of time in the early game. Also, you have to maintain a lead in the tech research early. You do this by trading/selling your techs to the AI before they research them.

The next patch will give you an option to turn off the tech trading in game and will probably help you some with the AI tech getting out of hand.
