GalCiv2 Prices

Just wondering...

Just wondering, but I've been reading the various posts the mods have put up and saw some oddities in the prices for Galciv2, that puzzled me a little. Not really sure where to post these questions, but here's to hoping someone official could clarify. Ok, so here's what I gathered from the various price options:

1. The retail prices for Galciv2 is at $40, but according to the posts, aproximately half (some $20) of that goes to the retailer so Stardock only gets about $20 if you buy it at the store.

2. The 'on-site' price is $45 for download, and +S/H if you want the actually disks. The reason that it's $45 instead of $40 is that Stardock doesn't want to undercut the retailers, it's done to promote business (for future support, I suppose). However, all $45 of this would go to Stardock.

3. You can also get the game on Totalgaming.net for the same price ($45) or 5 tokens, if you are a member. In which case, you really only pay $35. This, although obviously the cheapest method, requires you to spend $70 to get 10 token, the other 5, you can use to buy REALLY cheap games or save it up for future stardock products (Society anyone? it's looking pretty cool, already bought and paid for too... sort of. lol). With Totalgaming.net you can download it as many times as you want, hell, you can back things up and burn your own CDs and install it somewhere else (for those who fear its longevity), so the 'physical' isnt really an issue anymore.

So here are my questions: If Totalgaming.net is a part of Stardock, when we buy it from Totalgaming.net do you guys really get all $35 of that? (well obviously some would go to maintain the Totalgaming.net network, but that would have to be maintained anyways, right?) And lastly, is there ANY reason, and I mean ANY reason to get it anywhere else besides to get the collector's edition?

Oh wow... I can't even find my own posts through these forums without going through "my posts". I wonder if anyone can actually see this thing.

Patience! The posts do come up.... if not always where you expect and they do take a couple of mins sometimes!

If it hadn't have worked, you'd have been talking to yourself!

As for the prices thing. You can probably buy it much cheaper through retail. A huge company gets a major discount by buying it in bulk, they need to make a profit but they do so over quantity.

I personally bought it through straight from Stardock for a number of reasons: It's convenient as you said, the money goes direct to the devs, I live in Thailand and it was still cheaper for me to direct download than having it shipped here.

Stardock made a number of posts when it was first released in answer to questions from fans as to which way they should buy it - the answer was: Anyway you want to, whichever is best for you is best for us.

I think that says it all!

Actually, if you look at the dates, the posts are usually more than 3 days apart, I just couldn't find my post no matter how deep I dug, lol. I'm a little surprised you found it actually, I thought it was lost in some black hole that only I can reach with the "my post" option.

But as for prices, it's not really for me (I already have mine), but I'm wondering what would be the best option so that I can recommend it to others. The way I see it, the best would be through totalgaming.net ($35 versus $40 from retail). Just wondered if they get all the money like they do from the website, and just pointing out to everyone that maybe this was their answer to the "can't undercut the retail" problem. ^_^;;;
