Planets not showing up?

I finally got the time to start a game tonight. I played about 20 turns and the entire time noticed something odd.
I have no 3-D graphics for my planets. In some screenshots I see planets along with moons spinning around them. In my game I just get symbols for all planets ( a baby blue outline) and for starbases I get a symbol as well (baby blue diamond)
What am I missing? Is there something you have to research before you can see 3D planets?
3D stars show up just fine.
Also I had a massive dose of first timers luck. The first habitable planet I ever found besides Earth...class 19 planet
Half of the surface is usuable area.
