What to do with 'small' planets?

Hello,

I don't know what to do with planets like mars that have very few workable tiles in the range of 3 or less.
Can anyone offer suggestions? Do most people specialize these planets like making a research base, etc?

Pretty much just a research base for me. Anything 6 and below I typically just put 1 factory and the rest research.

Same here, but when you get discovery spheres made, upgrade that last factory into a sphere

I usually throw down one factory, one farm, and one stock exchange. The farm helps them from getting conquered as easily, and provides stock for my invasion ships to use. The stock exchange helps keep them happy as well as gives me a little money boost. For planets that are slightly larger I usually put research buildings like everyone else said.

If they're tucked away safely in the centre of my empire they go research only. Anywhere else they go military production only. If it's still too low to make a real difference in your military output, put it to use making constructors to help service the rest of your empire.

Anything lower than 8 with no visibly upgradeable tiles becomes an all out research facility. 1 Factory then all labs. If the planet has upgradeable tiles bringing it up to 9 or more, it gets 1 factory, 1 starport and then all labs. Later in the game when I upgrade those tiles, 2 of them become farm/entertainment networks. This nearly doubles the pop making it harder to conquer, giving you more tax, raising your influence.

If a low quality planet has a special resource, I tend to use that resource. 1 example, I had a PQ4 planet with a 700% and 2 100% manu bonuses. This became a mini factory planet with a starport. It ended up being my second most productive world (straight after the PQ14 planet with 700% manu bonus and a Manu capital!)
