Don't Understand the AI

Hello All, i just do not understand the AI in GalCiv 2.

I thought the Altarians were good guys, you know......saints, but how come when i was playing a race being good as well, that they decided that they wanted to enslave my people and then the galaxy???

I never understand AI now-a-days, its always the following:

strong vs AI = AI wants all peace and alliances

weak vs AI = AI wants all war and domination

For once can't the AI accually go by their races' allignment?

Also, every Gigantic Game i have played, i get stuck in the corner with only 3 planets usable while the AI get the rest???

I was hoping the Story Campaign would be one giant game, instead of multiple games, so it makes researching useless since you don't keep the research.....oh well

So, can you give me any pointers, but then again all these games seem to be is 'rush them before they rush you' type strategies and i hate them, if you got to do that to win, then it shouldn't be a strategy game.

finally can just get the tech to upgrade my buildings and the AI automatically upgrade it, which most games don't have.

so, any pointers??

thanks in advance,
JamieKirby

I not sure what it is you want....

If you don't want to fight the A.I then you have to stay on par with him militarily....or else you're right....he's going to attack you if he thinks he can beat you. There are ways that you can curb this behavior to a degree. Trade is a good one, the A.I will be reluctant to destroy his best trading partner. Gifts can be good too....but who likes to give stuff away, right? Aiding them when they're in trouble can help. Try some of that.

Projecting strength is important though...even when it' toward would be friends. You know you're ok when they start floating you a little cash, just because you have such a benevolent nature.

Sometimes you get shafted on the maps...not much to do here except bite the bullet and play or retire and start over.

You can set the game up to automatically upgrade your structures....check the governor's interface.

Actually, I second this motion - "Good" AIs should sue for peace over aggression, only going to war when attacked or to help friends. It would just make more sense

Also, do know that even if you're militarily strong agaisnt AI, they might still declare war on you if several factors pitch in: Closer border, ethical alignement, if you're parking war ships next to his worlds/starbases, heavy influence on his worlds, etc.

What I would like to see though, is the AI more inclined to attack even if you have a stronger military.

Surely the point is that the AI is trying to win the game as well? Why would it attack someone stronger than itself?

Good point....

But even if you are "Good" if you haven't been very good to your neighbor he may attack you no matter what his alignment is. That's why I suggested trading with and assisting the civs you want to be "friends" with, if you don't they may see you as just another obstacle and not a friend, perhaps you aided an enemy of his in the past or something...I'm pretty sure the game takes a lot of this stuff into account when it is determining how to deal with you.

....then there's alliances.

Also to point ctrl+N is your friend any time you find yourself stuck in a corner. Altough I love starting in a corner provided I can nab a handful of sectors. Corners are cushy becuase you won't get people comming at you from all sides, which can really set a paerson on edge. I find starting in dead center a pain, always end up with 3 wars in the beginign fo the game

I have a huge galaxy game going right now that started me in the corner. I actually used that to my advantage and worked my way across the whole top side of the map. Then slowly but surely started working my way south one sector at a time. Planetary invasion after planetary invasion. Just when I thought I had the Yor (once the top civ) cornered for destruction, her surendered to the Drath Legion! I was so upset I canceled all my alliances and started war with everyone.

At that point I was able to, and I have about a 2 sector width left to conquer, plus a few standby worlds like Earth and Mars. They had a few more citizens for my meat grinders than I was prepared for. However with a soldier rating of 61 to 10, it won't be long...

Well, its not like i don't want to fight the AI, its just that i like it when i deserve it.

Its like on Master of Orion 2, when i used Biological Weapons, all the other races banded together and all declared war on me. lol

Just imagine: you vs the universe.

It was a good job i was more advanced, cause every 10 turns, i got attacked with waves of like 10 Titans. lol (2nd biggest ship you can make...if you haven't played the game)

Master of Orion 2 AI was good, they always strived for peace, but if you did them wrong, they will rape your worlds like crazy. lol

But as the more graphical Space Exploration Games come out, the AI got more and more aggressive where they preferred war over peace, even the peaceful ones.

Its like a Space Exploration game in the Star Trek Universe, where you are the Federation and you meet the Vulcans and they attack you with pure hatred. (how stupid is that?)
