tradegoods

rush buy or be patient? Sell to all?

In my first couple of games the (good) Altarians kept finishing construction of a tradegood just a couple of turns before me..... Damn!

Just wondering what other players do with/about tradegoods.

Do you sell tradegoods to all AI or only allies?

Do you know how much priority the AI gives to building tradegoods themselves? Is there a difference between good and evil races?

Are you patiently building tradegoods (40wks+) and take the risk of loosing the 'race' to the AI? or do you rush buy?

Depending on the game I nowadays frequently do this:
- sell a bunch of techs to all the AI
- from that profit rush buy 'diploimatic translators' (6000 BC) in the same turn
- sell it to all AI (at 1500-2000BC each) in the same turn
- from (a part) of that profit rush buy 'Xanthium hullplating' or 'Apfrodisiac' the next turn.
- depending on the treasuries of the AI, sell that next tradegood off to thos who can 'afford it' (again 1500-200BC each)

If the circumstances are right, you can make 10.000BC in 1 or 2 turns and deplete the treasuries of the AI opponents

I usually rush buy, unless I'm way ahead on the tech needed to get it (i.e., none of the aliens even have the pre-req yet).

At the same time, I'm kind of a miser - I hoard the trade goods for the most part.

MY PRECIOUSSSSS.

,

what?

I rush buy them on very rare occasions only. Usually I have a very powerful production planet that, with focus on social production, can finish the early trade goods in 6-10 turns, so there's not much need to spend billions on it.

And I also hoard them, unless its Micro Repair Bots . Though, I sometimes use Xanthium hull plating in my persuasions for an alliance.

Does one keep the use of a trade good after one trades it?

(I've been playing too much Civ 4 and assumed that trading it away would remove its availability)

I assume it does.

A tradegood gives a certain ability/bonus to all who 'have' the tradegood.

Unlike techs which are 're-sellable', the race that researches a tradegood has the exclusive right to sell it.

If I research a tradegood and sell it to the Altarians, they can't re-sell it to another race. We both get the added ability/bonus the tradegood gives you....

Greetings,

I am usually an heavy tech seller. Diplomatic translators are importants for the diplomatic bonus is gives you. it can make quite a difference in price of techs you get from the AI. So, I never sell it to any other race. But I sell the other trades goods in those cases:
- I am about to invade an opponent. I sell him all my techs and trade goods (even diplomatic translators) to pick up his warships and starbases just the turn before I invade.
- If I am at war with an AI and I want absolutely peace, I use trade goods.
- If I want a particular starbase, I use trade goods with sometimes a few techs and money.
- If I need money to build a galactic achievement that will give me an hedge, I can sell them too.

Thank you

I also squirrel away trade goods that I've taken the time to research. If someone else manages to beat me to the punch, I beat the crap out of them then take it from them like it was so much lunch money.

One thing I do is to turn one or two of my core worlds into a factory world. Maybe it'll have a couple of farms and entertainment complexes and a starport on it but that's it. The rest of the squares are dedicated to nothing but machinery. I usually only do this on a world that's class 12 or better. That way, any time I need to get a tradegood or any other galactic improvements created, I just upgrade one of the factories and it gets built pretty quickly.

My little planet with a precursor mine and a manufacturing capital seems to get the trade goods first just fine.

I generally don't even try for the trade goods, except occasionally the hull plating (just to make sure the Drengin or Yor don't get it). They're nice, but I prefer spending my resources elsewhere.

I rush buy the good that synergizes with my civ ability. Liek when I use HP whore and repair civ, I would rushbuy the hull and repair bot goods.

I usually give away Aphrodesiac as an incentive to become an Ally.

The only times I give out hull plating or micro-repair bots is when a minor race is being hounded by another major race.

To date, I've never been able to trade goods for goods with any of the AIs.
