Different Ship Colors for Different Classes

Just a thought: don't make ship colors faction-based. Instead, let every class of ship have its own color scheme available. For example, make a large, obvious, brightly-lit flagship to proudly carry the standard of your civilization forth into the unknown. However, for more clandestine, belligerent purposes, a black/gunmetal color for stealthy ships would be more apropos. I know it would require some big tweaking, but just a thought. Feedback?

Sorry, but I think it's more important to be able to tell the faction of a ship at a glance.

Honestly, there is this massive ship designer function that lets you design your ships yourself. If you want you could probably build a ship that actually spells out its class literally! (I ought to try that soon, letter shaped ships )

maybe, but they'd need another way to tell ships at a glance, like a little logo on top of it.

This could be implemented in two ways (or both!)

When building the 3D models in the ship designer, the color selection options for ships that you normally can only adjust when setting up the game could be altered and tied to a class. I'm wondering if this would cripple the 3D engine on the main map however....

Alternatively (and I like this ) add a new menu or screen that lists all your ship classes in the game. Next to each entry would be a button that opens a pop-up with an array of 2D symbols like what you see when you zoom out on the main map, only with many more choices. Click to select which symbol gets displayed.

For fleets, show the symbol of the most prevalent class in the fleet; if no one type is prevalent, then display the class with the highest hit points, if tied, then by alpha order. To indicate that it is a fleet, make it oversized, invert it, or use a caret or other accessory symbol.

Cool

I don't get this... If I see a fleet of 8 ships, I know that those arent 8 huge ships.... I don't really know what OP's problem is, if you zoom out to tactical display you can tell the strength of the fleet. But regardless Once I am at war with an AI i quickly learn what his ships look like. So I can tell at a glance what is in the fleet.

Stardock has limited resources, and I would elect to have them used for something more importnat than this thing, which I would work to mod out if it were implemented.
