I'm a noob, needing some help

I bought this game a couple of days ago, didn't get much sleep

I was doing this mission where I gotta make this race ally with me. Ok, np, I thought, and started building my empire. I decided to go with diplomacy and influence. On one hand, I was enjoying myself, ripping off the aliens and getting tons of free moneyz! On the other, my influence efforts weren't as fruitful. I thought that building some really big fancy influence bases would increase my influence border thing. Not only it didn't, not only did it not grow, it got smaller, because the aliens I was trying to influence seem to be having no problem at all making theirs bigger. Also, they declared war because they didn't like my bases, and I lost the mission.

Any advice?

Build some defenses. The AI won't declare as often if you have a decent military.

Do ALOT of trading with them, and give them loads of free stuff. Your relations will go to "close" in no time!

If I am correct, influence is, or can be at least, a determent to allying. If you look at the Foreign Advisor (can't remember which tab), you may find that your close borders earn you a - or a -- instead of + or ++ to the empire's attitude toward you. I'm sure the manual says, but I think influence is more for taking over alien planets than for diplomacy. I tried a diplomatic victory once. My strategy? Build up your economy and research, then when you are ready, give them like 10% of your cash and a high level tech or two every turn. Once they are ready (the step past close, I think), they will accept an alliance. If that is your only objective, don't be afraid to give them every dime and tech you have, even planets, just to be sure. Of course, mine was a metaverse game, and I had all of the diplomacy tree researched, so there may be other ways for shorter games. Try a variation on that first though, see where it gets you.

Boost up your diplomacy. Also, you need strong basis for military. You might not need to be the strongest military nation, but you need to be considered a thread.

In a recent battle over the galaxy, I made a bunch of not so powerful ships, actually I would've been overrun at almost any point of the game, had I been attacked. I got a sweet lvl 29(? or 23, anyway, sweet) planet so i got to boost everything up. By the time I build anything capable, i had a lot of small fighters, a few medium sized ships, but my Large ships were first capable of war.

Not only did i maintain non-war situation until this point, I managed to ally one of the major races. When it came time to act on one race that was getting a bit bigger than I wanted - I attacked and invaded a planet he had stolen from a minor race (Whom I LOVED! Damn them!). After invading it, I waited a couple of turn and paid them a bit so they'd peace me again. Soon after my influence and diplomacy were enough to ally everyone but them! So it was just a matter of eliminating them then. I didn't lose any military ships in the game (lost my poor flagship and a couple of freighters).

I made post earlier about überfast ships, it was sweet I had few Large and Huge ships with like 3 Warp Drives and Nano rippers, not much defence. They went were like a scalpel in the hand of a surgeon that is me!

Yeah I get it now. I finished the mission, but I had no military forces at all. the aliens kept dissing me about it too "ah, how is our weakling friend doing?" it took me a decent amount of time, but on my third try, I managed to get a massive economy running, with almost 800 bc a week, I researched the all of the yellow techs, and much more in the areas outside armor, weapons, engines, etc. I simply drowned them with money... like 10k every time I had it, and all my techs over a certain amount of time. I still couldn't ally with em tho, so I used influence bases with like over 200% improvements, to slowly take over the entire map. Something I noticed, is that the aliens, though my friends, tried to stop me by building lots of their own bases, so that I can't build my own. Worked my way around that though
