Starbase Zone of Control

Hi yall, I'm new to the whole Galactic Civilization experience.
Reading the manuals it says that the these starbases have a zone of control.
Is there any to view how big this "zone of control" is? Is there a view button somewhere that i'm missing?
Just figured it would be a good thing to know beofre i build a miltiary base to buff my ships and its too far away

While i was asking about starbases....
Is the influence starbase the only way to increase your territory without invading a planet?
Thanks for yalls help

If you click on a starbase to select it, you should see a faint circle in your civilization's color around it. That is the zone of control. It's roughly an 8 sector radius.

As for influence, as long as you're producing more influence points than your neighbor, your border will creep towards him. However, having an influence starbase will dramatically speed up the effect (within the zone, of course).

Any square within about 6-8 squares (turn the grid on) will be close enough to the base to get the effects. 6 squares if you are on the diagonal, 8 on the horizontal or vertical.

As far as I can tell, the highlighted zone only needs to intersect the square that your planet is in to make the entire square count. For planets on the very edge, you can confirm they are in the zone by building one improvement on the starbase that impacts productivity or trade. Then view the planet to see if the influence is taking effect, either through the details or summary button (I forget which one, and don't have galciv2 up right now).

In the upcoming patch, they have said they will add a feature such that constructor ships will display the area of effect a starbase would have if you used that constructor to build a starbase in the ship's current square, which is MUCH better than having to save, build the base, then click on it to see if it's in the right place
