How do you name your ships?

So... how do you personally name your ships? Do you use a code to name them?

I generally only name the ship by class and the revision number, ie Battleship_Mk1a, etc. But the following game I end up having to overwrite my old designs and can't remember what the old models were meant for or what techs it needs.

What do you do?

I use a basic little naming code, then a fluff name. My colony ship is "UC-1 Coloniser", for example. 'U' for utility, 'C' for colony, and '1' for the generation. With warships the code is a bit longer. "WF-MP-1 Wasp". In the first section: 'W' for warship and 'F' for fighter (tiny hull). 'M' for missile weapons and 'P' for point-defense (any anti-missile defense).

I use a whole range of names.

Constructors: Builder, Fabber, RapidFab...
Colony: Rapidcol, Angel's Pencil (From the Niven short story.)
Freighters: Dromedary
Transport: Barbarian, Tarantula
Huge class warships: Angelic Beam (for a 40/0/0 beam warship)
Small class: Raptor, Rapier, Scimitar, TroopZapper (anti-transport fighter), RapidZapper, RapidDuo, RapidNuker, Aegis Beast.
Tiny class: Hornet

Revisions are MkI, MkII for major weapons loadout changes, MkIa MkIb etc for minor tweaks like more range or cheaper engines.

My last couple of games I kind of accidentally started using a naming system. Similar to Ostsol's, except I started out clueless, calling my ships different sci-fi ship classes based on the hull. That, and I add the ships weapon types in order of power, followed by the ship's speed. For example, one of my huge hull warships is called SD-GM19 Sagan, for Star Destroyer (as I've taken to calling my huge warships), heavy gun attack/light missile attack, movement 19. It's upgrade is the SD-GM19A Pardoe, basically the same ship with somewhat higher point-defense and missile attack. My favorite names so far have been for medium ships (frigates): the F-M7 McKenna and F-M9 Kerensky. Though on my fighters I just go by hull type and the actual name, like the LF-SNK2 Super Snark. As far as the full name, I name most of my huge hull warships after sci-fi authors (SD-M16 Asimov, SD-MG19 Clarke; Niven got a ring-shaped heavy troop transport), while medium frigates get named after sci-fi characters, and fighters just get something random and fast, like the Snark. Large vessels don't really have a naming convention, other than the technical "BC" for 'battlecruiser'.

So yeah, that's my take on it, hope I haven't bored ya.

I pretty much a similar mechanism
A few examples (system too complicated to explain in detail)
SC-6 Border Patrol : Sixth scout version
F300-S Legionair : First version of the 3rd generation of medium ships, with high speed (S)
X141 Avalanche : Second version of the 1st generation of huge ships, 4 stands for missile offense and beam defense (a 0 in the middle means prototype)

I just name them as i see fit I will look at a ship and think...."hmmmn Relentless? Yup that suits it"

Then to save time deciding what to do with it next time i just write teh details of the sip down on.... wait for it.... PAPER
