OK, first off, excellent game Stardock, this is my #2 game(#1 is civIV...sorry), but I just had a suggestion or two on the combat.
The combat is really kind of simplistic with three attack values and three defense values. My thoughts: make specialized weapons that you could control with a button during combat. However, I understand that it would be hard to make the combat simulator interactive, so perhaps they would be automatically triggered during combat. Such weapons could make a difference in winning and losing.
Examples:
Suicide Packs - The ship will explode and damage everything in the area when they are about dead and there are not many friendly ships left. Also, predeath will detonate them anyway.
Decoy Ships - An outfit that will decrease the cost of the ship by 10 times(build ships like normal). They will appear perfectly normal(weaponry stats normal), but in combat, they won't fight. Useful as a diversion to scare the crap out of your enemy so they muster all of their forces in one spot.
Neutralizer - Decreases a certain defensive attribute of the target ship to 0. The catch is that the ship must continually hold the neutralizer on the target without doing anything else(firing). This way, another ship could come in and take advantage of the lack of defense.
