Does a higher population affect military/social/tech production?

Seems sort of an obvious question but I'm always debating between putting down 3 farms on a planet or just 1 farm and 2 more factories...thoughts?

Only indirectly (More taxes = more money you can spend on production). There is no direct correlation, however. You can have a massive manufacturing planet with 1 person on it, and it will produce just as well as if it had 20 trillion.

That's why you basically have 3 types of planets:

Manufacturing planets - nothing but factories, a starport, and wonders. You don't need farms or economics or morale enhancers. There are no multipliers for manufacturing (except for starbases and your manufacturing capital).

Economics planets - your best PQ planets. You have farms, stock markets, and entertainment centers. This is what high-PQ planets get used for : cash cows. You need 3 types of improvments to have a good economics planet, and that's why you need PQ here.

Tech planets - Those 4 PQ planets make good tech planets. All you need here are research centers. Unlike manufacturing and economics, research can be spread out over lots of different planets. The only exception is your tech capital, which should be a high PQ planet.

Because, I'm assuming, with the lack of farms comes a lack of overpopulation.
With a lack of overpopulation, comes a lack of unrest, thus the lacking of happy-making buildings ^_^

wont producing troop transports on small planets drain the population fast?

how do you compensate?

er also I guess you will need a morale building or two on the 1 big PQ manufacturing capital?

You don't have to pull the population from the planet that built the transport...

There are still reasons to have Farms on planets, Influence is generated by higher populations. If you're trying to win culturally or are in a stalemate and trying to prevent (or cause) some planets to flip, increasing population will help (along with cultural increasing buildings).
