can i defend my planet with ships?

yes, but it will only defend one ship at a time unless you have the Orbital Defense Manager

You should always have at least one small ship on each planet, that way the AI can't send one troop ship over and grab it, which they WILL do.
ObjectDock - Access shortcuts and frequently used applications from an animated dock.

Having a fast fleet nearby is better than ships in orbit. The fast fleet can attack the enemy ships/fleets and thus get the attacker advantage and your planet does not need a Orbital Defense Manager. Ships in orbit do get an attack/defense bonus though.

Duh... I feel like such a tool. I read the description for this building and couldn't quite grasp it's use (and therefore, never built one). I just kept sending my fleets to my big planets thinking they were fully defended. Thanks a lot for clearing it up for me!

so if i have orbital ddef manager, i could defend with many ships?


Yeah an orbital fleet manager would do it - also if your going to be defending a planet without ever bothering to launching ships and interecepting the incoming fleets you might also want to build the planetery defense building as well since it'll give bonuses to your ships that are in orbit.

I'm guessing you can create fleets -- with their overall size dependent on your current Logisitcs ability, and have that fleet defend your planet as a whole. Otherwise, each ship in orbit only defends individually (for example, w/out the orbital defense mgr, a whole fleet of enemy ships would take on each of your defending ships, one at a time, and more than likely take each one out. With the ODM, your ships would be grouped into a fleet, and that fleet would take on the entire enemy fleet)

OK, sorry... now another question. With the Planetary Defense in place, can it be upgraded the same way a Starbase can (i.e., through Constructors), or is it upgraded through future research (and upgrades to the structure once the reasearch is finished)?

What would you upgrade it to? No, there is no upgrade. It simply lets whatever ships are in orbit defend as a fleet. The concept is simple, the effect is powerful.

There is also some structure you can build to increase hitpoints of ships in orbit if I remember correctly, and another structure that increases your ground defenses by 25% to defend against landings if the bad guys get past your ships.

I almost never use planet defense. I have a few tiny ships to gurad planets in case of a transport, and use picket fleets so I can initiate the battle. If I lose the initated battle, I'm more than likely hosed anyway. I do have a ground defense improvemnt on all my major planets just in case I'm waiting for a fleet to travel across a galaxy.

If you would have slowed down a little and read the post, you would have seen I was asking about the "Planetary Defense" (PD) building, not the "Orbital Fleet Manager" (OFM). I understand that the OFM allows you to place fleets in orbit around a planet to defend it as a full fleet, plain and simple (no need for an upgrade).

However, from the description offered of the PD (by another poster in this thread), it sounds like a PD makes the planet it is built on simulate a Military Starbase. Military Starbases can be upgraded (with Constructors). I was asking if the PD is also upgradeable, and if so, how... Through researching tech (and upgrading the building) or by building a Constructor and sending it to said planet.
