I have a tech-tree, but i don't have an "item" tree

I have a copy of the tech-tree provided in the game. What I can't seem to find is a chart that shows me what tech I need to have to build a specific thing. For example, say I want to build a Battleship - I have no idea what I need to research to get there.

Thanks in advance,
Mjolnier

Well, it is all up to you what components you want for your ship. If you like to know the core design ones, all you need to do is click on the Research screens and then highlight one of the hull sizes (ie Medium hull). It will then give you a description of the research, and a list of researches needed (that you haven't already got), to get those core design ships.

The basics you need are:
Hull size
Engine
Life Support

Optional:
Sensors
Weapons
Defense

My Tech tree does this with ship designs that I have created but not with core designs. For some reason I can not get the core design ships to become available and I can not tell which technologies (if any) I am missing so I can build them.

hmmm... maybe I am wrong then and I was seeing my own designs.

In which case it would be nice if someone could catalog each core design and their techs, and hopefully the devs would put this info into the research screen too?

I rarely use core designs, and usually obsolete them as soon as they show up. About the only exception is the default Colony, Constructor, Freightor & maybe Transport ships.

When I start a game with a new race (stock or custom), one of the first things I do is go into the Shipyard & redesign those core ships plus a Light Fighter (Tiny hull). The only things I add are the "bling" custom features; as I gain new hull sizes, I do the same for it. Then, as I upgrade drives, weapons & all else, I can update that prototype hull & re-save it as something different. I've also started deleting the older (but not the prototype!) models, so they don't clutter up the game. This lets me have a collection of "custom" ships, that I get access to immediately upon researching the base tech - hull size, trade & planetary invasion - without wondering what weapons or life support I also need. About the only thing I use the default ships for are some basic build ideas.

Now if the game would let me save different sets of ships into their own sub-folders.
