Creating ships in Shipyard

Ok guys, please forgive me here....I'm really new to the game....but I must say, I love it already! Anyway, as far as building ships....I'm not sure I fully grasp the idea of building my own ships. I understand how to get in there and start with a "core" and begin adding parts to end up with a finished vessel. What I'm a bit confused on is how this relates to actual gameplay. I'm guessing I can that I can modify my in game ships to look anyway I want them and use them while playing rather than using the pre-made ships? Can I get in there and create a whole new Colony ship for example and save it and then when I manufacture a colony ship in game it will appear as the one I created? And if so...can someone please be kind enough to explain the steps to doing that? Ok, thank you all

Man, I don't want to be a dick, but try reading the manual (it's in the game folder).

Well, I will give you a brief summary, but the tutorial videos and manual cover this...

Core ships are there for you to use, and can't be upgraded. Any ships that you design will need to be saved with a name other than that of a core ship. Your designs are available in addition to the core ships. Your designs will nearly ALWAYS be better than the core ships. I only use a core ship maybe once or twice in the first 5-10 turns of the game, and after that every ship I use is one I have tailor made.

While you can make your ships as pretty/cool as you want, the main purpose of the shipyard is to utilize the new weapon/defense/engine/sensor/life support techs that you have been researching into your space fleet. In order to use your new techs to their maximum potential, you need to create your own ships. Once you think about it, and try it for the first time you will realize. Good luck.

You're welcome. Also, the upcoming 1.1 patch will make it even better so if/when you bump into something frustrating there is already a tweak on it's way
