Stardock's OTHER game project

http://www.societygame.com

While many of us are working on Galactic Civilizations II in order to deliver new updates, the rest of our game team is working on our other major game title, Society.

Society is a massively multiplayer RTS. But it's not an RTS in the sense most people think of it -- warfare is not what people will spend most of their time doing.  Most of the time is spent building their society -- constructing buildings, researching the endless technology tree (it's a persistent world so that tech tree goes on forever), helping their Socians live out their lives, trading with neigbhors.  Oh, don't get me wrong, there's definitely war. It's just not that common.

If you thought the ship design stuff in GalCiv II is cool, wait till you see what you'll be doing in Society. Virtually everything can optionally be designed by the users (see screenshot).

To get the latest news on it, head over to www.societygame.com.

What happened to "Elemental" or the "Master of Magic" clone/sequel? I thought that was next up?

I will most likely buy it. Personally, I rate Stardock as 3/4 on games that I've bought from them. I liked "The Corporate Machine", GC1 (duh), and GC2 (duh). However, I found "The Political Machine" to be quite a disappointment. (Still, 3/4 is a very high rating. They'd probably have to make several lousy games in a row for me to get disgusted.)

Actually, Stardock says "we support our old games", but I haven't seen any new maps or industries for "The Corporate Machine" (or at least release the specs so I could write my own). (Although I'd personally settle for "The Corporate Machine 2" as a new game.)

I just do not play games with a monthly fee (figuring that is what this will have) as you are too tied to the game since you are automatically paying for it every month, makes you feel like you have to play it to justify the expense.

Well, what if you only have time to play 2-3 hours/week? It makes much less sense to pay a monthly fee if I'm not going to have a ton of free time to play it.

Also, it's not fun to play an MMO where you have to put a lot of hours into it to be competitive, when you have other things to do.

We don't claim to provide indefinite updates to our games. Just for their effective lifetime.

Eventually compilers, libraries, SDKs, etc. get major updates and you'd end up having to either keep old machines with the dev stuff on hand or rewrite significant parts of the game.

The ONE game I'm still a little bitter about was The Political Machine. That experience convinced us to self publish. Couldn't do updates without publisher's permission and that required the publisher to have QA resources and so we found ourselves having to beg to do updates.

We'll be self-publishing The Political Machind 2008. It'll be a $40 game and it'll have $40 in features.

Need more developers. We're hiring.

The whole building part seems to be like Spore without the initial one-unit-only phase but with heavy multiplayer focus. Is that about right?

Mabye it could be a prequel to Galciv set on antcient Altaria and it's about the rise of several Altarian civs and would expand all the way to the Altarian-Drath wars.

any liklihood of a progress report ? priorities change and Stardock now seems more of a publisher than games developer and I was wondering how this is affecting development of "Society".

So for the next year, until the beta-tests were originally pencilled-in, I'm happy with Twillight, but for variety and as an introduction to gain some experience in MMORPG play I'm trying-out www.wurmonline.com, which seems to be the closest substitute.

Society is on back-burner for at least a few years. The fantasy game and probably GC3 will come first, and hopefully by that point we'd have the manpower and infrastructure to do Society justice.
