When is lucky TOO lucky?

Playing my second game with a custom race with the 'lucky' attribute and very early in the game I was awarded the 'Lucky Ranger' ship discovery event. Several turns later, another and then another and then another. With these four ships I merrily swept away my foes and easily whomped on a few other races who had yet to become foes.

Another game this weekend with the same race resulted in the same series of Lucky Rangers being handed to me. Just for laughs I started donating them to minor races that I was friendly with just to watch the damage.

At any rate, doesn't that seem excessive? FOUR Lucky Rangers granted over the span of just a few months? Yikes!

It's happened to me before to, both with Rangers and Corvettes

A couple of annoying this is that they are REALLY slow..

But heck enormous power.

I wonder if there is a bug that links the discovery of one with others somehow?

I had... 9-11 in one full game. And that was just a 'tiny' bit excessive.

Well I guess that's what you get for clicking on the "Lucky" option in the race management screen. lol

I had four Lucky Rangers show up, one per week, but it seemed like an event triggered it. In this case the vastly superior Drengin who controlled 85% of the map finally declaring war on me. After that it was a Lucky Ranger for me every week for four weeks. I still lost after the Drengin built ships to "accomodate" the Rangers.

It did seem rather excessive that all of a sudden my archaeologists dug up every precursor artifact in the quadrant.

I posted in another thread about this. In my game an AI opponent got a Precursor Corvette and dispatched it to wreak slow havok in my territory. It was too early to have built up any conventional resistance and I only destroyed it after losing about 30 ships to it, almost every fighting ship I had by then. Anyway, 2 turns later he got another one.

I had the same thing happen. But I had taken lucky as a racial power and was the universal party. So I had a huge luck bonus.

In my one game I had 6 Rangers at the end. To be honest they are tought, but there slow speed makes them less useful then the Genocide Class Ships(Huge hulls with Phasors and Warp Drives) I was building by the end. I ended up using them as planet defense ships while mmy faster ships swept out and crushed my enemies.

also by the end game anything you make will generaly outclass the rangers (provided you last long enough in the game)

In one of my first 'serious' games I got 4 Lucky Rangers within a month. Don't recall what party I was, or if I had the Luck ability. I do know that it was so early in the game that I instantly won.

Please nerf Lucky Rangers.

oh no, not another nerf posting....you should only get the word 'nerf' in Online games, not these type of games.

Well, you could just sell them when you get them if you are concerned of the game being too easy.

The AI is using this tactic on me now They have 2 of those rangers and they fly to one of my planets and just sit there killing my ships as i produce them. Until a transport comes along and takes a system (some failed but my smaller systems fell fast).

I did have stronger tech skills and kept pushing for better armor. Finaly building a ship to negate their attack and hitting them very hard. Since i only needed a few of these for their rangers they worked so well i put shields on these ships (enemy did beam damage) and kept using them. They were begging for a peace treaty after a short time.

Those rangers can ruin or atleast hurt you or the AI. Should be very rare. My game now i think i have 1 on each planet i control lol. Get them all the time and never use them other than for defense.

I had the game stall on a turn (I could do everything but the turn advance button wouldn't reappear) so I saved and reloaded three times until a special event broke the cycle (again I had the luck at the highest level for race) and a single ranger was found and turned the tide of the game for me.

Mabye the luck attribute augment the frequency and "power" of some events (instead of getting corvette you get rangers). for me it was seven and they really helped me until I finished my ship design (all hull, weapons, defence, engine and miniaturization tech (the ultimate good at all master at none ship well it dont really apply but.)).

Early Lucky Rangers certainly effect the game a great deal. Mid to late game, their slow speed really keeps them from being all effective. My experience is similar to others in that they seem to come in waves. I have received 3 of them in the last year in my current game. (With the Universal Party luck bonus.)
