Precursor Corvette random event?

Precursor Corvette random event?

Is the acquisition of a Precursor Corvette a random event or is there something that you can do to better your chances of finding one?

I was playing a game where one of the AIs (Korx I think) fielded one against me. It took a hell of a lot of firepower to put it down, especially in the mid-game where (had the AI been set smarter) it could have won the game with that one ship alone. I eventually destroyed it with massed fleets of cargo hulls packed with only weapons, but not before I lost about 30 ships to it.

So.... gasping and trying to recover from the slow grinding onslaught of the Precursor Corvette (it only had a speed of 2), I return my production queues to normal. But I get a message 2 turns later that the damned AI found ANOTHER Precursor Corvette!!!! WTF?!

Anyone care to shed some light on this coincidence?

sxt178, the event description tells you exactly what you need to get them: "in what some are calling a stroke of LUCK..." -- so Altarian Universalists can get tons of them.

Actually my first challenging game I got corvets, and man did they come in handy! I didnt need em at the times I got them, I was even complainging. But it became very very good. As they were able to takeover system defense for my fleets which died repellign the first invassion. And I was able to focus on buildign faster attack vessles.

If it wasn't for the corvetts, I surely would have lost my game!

Now I've gotten both the corvettes and the rangers, but I've never tried decommissioning them...do you get any reverse engineering techs from decommissioning alien vessels that have more technology than you?

100 corvettes + 2 or 3 stacked military starbases = ungodly pain and suffering.

The Drengin declared war on me . . I had a pitiful force of 2 missile attack fighters......

Then I got two Lucky Rangers, and pwnzed their (now) pitiful fleet of 3 missile attack fighters.

Which is pretty much why I destroy them when I get them these days, any random event that let sme when the game when I had no hope of it before is ridiculously unbalanced.

those rangers would be extremely powerful if there was chokepoints... but everyone can go around those slow ships, and they are always too late in battles.

I don't think they are too powerful... I wish that by scrapping them one could get a random precursor tech (old days with an old game, when my titans and battle stars with gravity beams were full of space marines, all ready to raid inside the ships from Antarès)...

Well once I had a game with "lucky ranger" problem , got about 15 of them in the raw (in about 30-40 turns) .
They were quete usefull protecting my planets first (I rarely build huge fleets so ...) but after about 5-6 of them my balance become negative ... so started to sell them to allies

I found 10 Rangers one game, but never had any corvettes. There seems to be a bug with Custom Civs where they don't get the Corvettes. I've played alot of games and haven't had one of my worlds double in value either, even though 2-3 of those events happen in 1 game sometimes.

Rangers aren't overpowered by endgame. I remember getting about five in a row, and even when they attacked they weren't a match for the state of the art thalan ships.

They'd be dangerous if their Missile Attack/Defence actually WORKED...

I found a Ranger which was automatically named, "Lucky Ranger". Good combat capabilities. Getting it to move around though...that was the tricky part. My Lucky Ranger must not have come with propulsion because the crew that found her had to put on their little EVA suits, hang tight to whatever protruded from its hull, and go for a full zulu burn on their suits' emergency thrusters just to get that damned thing to move anywhere.

I now fully understand what really happened in the titanic wars between the Arnor and the Dread Lords:

The Arnor ships travelled so slowly that they all reached transcendence and evolved beyond the need to assert their precence in the material plane. Meanwhile, most of the Dread Lords all died of sheer boredom, waiting for their sworn enemies to show up only to find that their ships were empty - if they even showed up at all.

There you have it. The whole story of the History of Galactic Civilizations all wrapped up into a single, two-sentence paragraph. Mystery solved. I should get like tons of bonus points for figuring this out. I'll accept my reward in five-token chunks every month OR a really cool, custom-made forum medal just for moi. Thanks. W00t!

Sorry Crazyhawk, but I think I know what really REALLY happened.

If you watch the opening movie, you'll see that the Arnor have biological type ships of their own. What I think really happened is that they built a fleet of these 'Rangers', and when they realized how useless they were offensively against the lightning fast Dread Lords, the Arnor just went and copied the organic ship idea from the DL's. Fed up because of all the resources they wasted on building the Rangers, the Arnor decided to fly them to undeveloped worlds and bury them so they would never have to see them again.

Eventually, over time, the ships became revealed and the younger races recovered them, and were thrilled thinking they found one of the Arnor's mightiest warships, but in reality they found what the Arnor considered lemons. When the DL's returned and showed the young races how valuable speed is when it comes to offense, the new owners of the ships realized the same thing the Arnor did in ages past. This time though, they did get something useful out of the Rangers, recycling them into the latest trade good: 3-D Video I-pods.

For me it depends on when i pick up a ranger if its early i normaly decommision it or sell it to a minor race however that said later on due to my complete disregard for military techs they can become effective stallers for the enemy!
