I've been saying for a while that if someone put a decent effort into a dead genre, 4x space games for one, the fact that people are starved of it will make it sell. Stardock struck gold with this game, did it completely right, now its the #1 seller on many sites and has been in the top 10 on gamespot for a few weeks.
Other companys try to revive a dead genre, dont advertise, or make a really crappy game, then the whole industry abandons it. Look at RPGs, all we get their is Bioware games and 3rd party foreign companies.... troikia went under from theirs as well (toee) as other companys, making RPG gaming, in that form (not a first person or 3rd person action game) a dead genre. Now, if we get anything, its 3rd party action games, diablo clones, and first person action games..... Space sims, dead genre..... egosoft makes the X games but they turn out to be subpar/buggy and not successfull. Flight sims.... new game once every 2 years and most of them sucking or being too complicated - dead genre.
With turn based, civilizations mediocrity and the fact that nobody else advertises and puts funding into their projects makes it dead. Master of Orion 3 obviously killed space strategy for a while, with galciv which was a little known game, holding many people.
All I have to say is GJ stardock for reviving a genre from death.
