Latest Review News..

Some more reviews of Galactic Civilizations II have arrived.

GamePlasma's review is up.

They sum up with the question:

I can only think of one last question to ask "Is it better then Civilization 4?" In my opinion it’s a dead heat based on you’re preference to dominate space or to dominate the planet.

GameDaily has their review of Galactic Civilizations II up as well.

Their summary:

This empire-building strategy encompasses everything that makes the genre great. If you are looking for a game that falls in the same vein as the Civilization and Master of Orion series, and absolutely bursting with content, this is the game to get. Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords is great technologically and also in gameplay.

More to come...

Nice reviews, any favourable comparison to Civ 4 is high praise. Good scores from both as well.

Seriously... both are going to be recognized as greatest games of all time.

It's really great to see the small guy coming up and making such a name for himself.

I personally enjoy Galactic Civilization 2 a lot better, simply because of the atmosphere and the ability to really create your ships. This game is.. well.. freakin' awesome.

(I never say this about a game either)

....when I'll get my hands on those Starforce, I'll......Oh, you changed the topic

Way to go, as usual! More 4X goodness for everybody!

Oh, why can't you and Firaxis work together?

best question ever

I believe they do have some connections with Firaxis. Could be wrong though.

One of the Civ4 developers was a beta-tester for GalCiv 2 (although I forget his name). Brad has credited the fellow for dispensing suggestions and advice that helped a lot to make the game better.

"Is it better then Civilization 4?" Well maybe if their grammar was better than a first grader's, we could take this review seriously.

The designer of Civ 4, Soren Johnson, is in the GalCiv II credits.  A few of the nicer UI tweaks in the game such as the turn button highlighting when you've moved all your units can be credited to him.

There's a review on gamespot.com aswell, don't know if it's been posted yet?
They gave it a 9/10

"Great games are always more than the sum of their feature sets, and Galactic Civilizations II is a great game. Galactic Civilizations II does indeed boast a very impressive list of cool features, but it also has that extra "something" that separates pretty good games from Hall of Fame material. In the case of Galactic Civilizations II, that extra element is a design that is clearly focused on catering to the desires of the player, rather than on trying to stuff the designer's preferences down your throat. From installation to end game, it is clear that this is not only one of the best turn-based strategy games to grace a PC, but one in which the player is treated like royalty." - 9/10 - GameSpot

Bah, that's the extent of you working together!? United you could make the hands down deepest bestest TBS ever! I wonder if a mod with civ's sdk could help unite certain features...

No thanks, I'm really not such a big fan of Civ games. Civ 1 was excellent, but then it all went downhill for me. I admit that Civ4 was better than Civ3, but not by much. GalCiv 1 and 2 hit exactly my kind of gameplay - with just a bit of guile I can survive pretty well without usually fighting with anything that moves, something rarely seen in any Civ game, and even then, Civ does it it poorly. GalCiv2 constantly keeps everything interesting with in-your-face surprises, even if you pick the pacifistic approach. It would be great to have even more surprises, like the Dread-Lords or other problems that might surface, but even now it's so much better than anything Civ has to effer to my type of players. The diplomacy model alone is better than the regular gameplay of Civ, IMO.

As it was said - you want to rule the earth or the galaxy? Pretty easy question, if you ask me .

i thought civ4 was awful tbh, almost every game rule is set up to stop you actually playing eg. if you put down too many citys you instantly run out of money

This means you cant beat the AI by numbers, nor can you beat it by conquering its citys, as after a long and hard war you think your celebrating victory, but mysteriously you have lost because you now have too many citys and no money.... and the battles are seriously stacked in the AIs favour leading to some most unlikely outcomes on the higher skill levels

Civ4 is a joke with pretty graphics, all prensentation ,and it is good in that respect, pretty to look at and nice sound, but as a game it quickly becomes tedious

I hate the you only can play these many turns and its over, that is ludicrous, I love GC2 I can play and play and play, I am playing a game right now and I am going into 6 hours, I am trying for an alliance victory but I still have the Drengins and Yors barking at me, so maybe it is time to take the Yors down.
